@NeuroRebel Was forced to give eye contact growing up with family. Now that I am away from their influence I tend to look someone in the eyes for a second or two then glance away for a second then look back in their eyes when dealing with customers. It looks odd but it eases the discomfort.
@MxBadgerNorth @NeuroRebel Exactly what I was thinking! Depending on the conversation, you don't actually have to talk much...a presentation could be in front of 1 person (okay) or 100 (definitely not okay...)
I asked my fiance for noise canceling headphones for Christmas. He knows I have issues with how loud he chews his dinner but I think he is finally beginning to realize the severity of my #sensoryoverload issues...
@AspieHuman@neurowonderful But...it has showed me that I am able to use one when absolutely necessary but for the most part I avoid pencils (and most paper products) like the plague.
I think this type of therapy can very easily traumatize someone and therefore should be handled with extreme caution.
@AspieHuman@neurowonderful I have a very strong aversion to the sound of pencils on paper (have an issue with most paper products in general actually...) and was forced to use number 2 wooden pencils daily until I no longer felt like I wanted to vomit. The discomfort and irritation never went away.
@edgar_a_bitch I recommend getting them off as quickly as possible...the longer they stay on the more painful it is to take them off. At least that is my experience.
@steve_asbell My ex was telling me I might have ADHD a while back and I denied it...then later on that day I interrupted his talking to yell "Look how cute that squirrel is!" He responded with "You literally just had an oh squirrel moment...are you sure you don't have ADHD?"
@steve_asbell I definitely get overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds so I try to get in and get out asap but if i am already having a bad day...it is like i get stuck there because i lose track of what i need to grab and everything becomes a panic-inducing blur.
@NeuroRebel I tend to be highly sarcastic as that was how I was raised but I don't tend to recognize sarcasm coming from other people unless it is super obvious or it is explained. Once I get a sense of how someone communicates I can start recognizing when they are sarcastic.
@GailSimone@NeuroRebel As a newly recovering alcoholic...I have concerns about going to parties and even little get togethers with people I don't know in case someone offers me alcohol. Luckily most of my friends are understanding and don't encourage drinking around me or if they do they don't offer.
@steve_asbell Can't think of a specific example right now. I am willing to try anything but don't be shocked if I spit it out or only eat a few bites and say I am done. My friends know not to even suggest Mexican food. Boyfriend claims I am the pickiest eater alive which might be true...
@NeuroRebel This year it will be very different and is actually bringing joy for once. Normally it is dread but without my abusers in my life and focusing only on those that actually love me and care about me instead of masking and dealing with people who hurt me? Pure joy right there.
