@simonsarris this is how my family spent our evenings while on vacation when I was growing up, and it's still one of my favorite ways to spend a quiet evening
@KelseyTuoc I took one of these! 2 weeks on Tolkien's life and works: at least 300 pages of dense daily reading + hours of daily class + class discussion graded for rigor & meaningful contribution + papers + a difficult no-notes blue-book final. Standards were high and it was fun!
@swayheld i have fond memories of spilling purple nail polish on a white counter in a tiny kitchen in rome, then scouring the local grocery in a panic for something that could clean it off, which is how I learned italian for nail polish remover. may your adventures be calmer than mine 🫡
@swayheld One thing I love: pick a place you like and just be there, like a local. Go to the grocery store, pick up some snacks, sit in the park with a book, cook a meal if your lodging setup allows, chat with someone if you can. Let the place seep into you.

This helped me recontextualize each tragedy as an increase in capacity to be there for others.
