103 years ago ‘Northern Ireland’ was created when Ireland was partitioned by the Government of Ireland Act 1920.
It was designed for unionists and to ensure unionists controlled it, and that nationalists would be forever second class citizens.
Today that glass ceiling will be smashed when Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill becomes the First Minister. The first republican to do so.
For those that said it would never happen, this is what change looks like.
I’m super proud of Michelle and I know she will be a First Minister for all.
This is the beginning of the end of that sectarian statelet, a United Ireland is one step closer. Now to keep working for change in this state and unite our island and bring about change for all our people. 🇮🇪 #history #change #michelleoneill #sinnfein
I am honoured to address the Assembly on this day of historic change.
As a First Minister for all, I am determined to work together with all parties to deliver for workers, families and all our communities.
