Developing language in a digital world
Young children's screen time is rising, sparking worries about its impact on vocabulary development. In this TiCS article, @SarahKucker discusses why it's not just about "how much" screen time, but how it's used.

Love #development? Applying to #PhD programs? I'm recruiting a Clinical Psychology PhD student! At the @SMUKIDLab we study language & cognitive development, with a current focus on digital media/tech use. Fully funded program & lots of cool people! Spread the word! @SMUPsychology
@melissaekline@deevybee@databrary may have some ideas? A bit different (it's storage of data, not participation), and in addition to the unified Databrary consent, each study still has a lab consent, but it uses many standard docs and the team does a fantastic job of coordinating with each institution
Exciting news - We are moving! We are starting a new adventure as the SMU KID (Kids in Development) Lab at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas! Same great team, same awesome research, but just a new name and space!

One of my fav studies, with @bbraunpsych@jmapsych Plus, was an excuse to see how kids react to margarita glasses and high heels (they love them).
We find age & vocab, but also children's shape bias, and oddity in object shape (but not color), impact item identification
"Margarita glasses and high heels: How attention to shape, age, and #vocabulary impacts children's recognition of typical and atypical exemplars," in #ChildDevelopment Journal (2022): https://t.co/ryoJE74Fxv
@jmapsych 1. Coordinate writing power hours with others - check-ins for 5 min, then silently write (individually on own item), check-in at end. 2. Schedule regular writing accountability groups (ideally with academic friends). Gold stars recommended for meeting goals in both cases.
It'll be official by the time we recover from final grading, so it's time to update my Bio. So excited to be joining great colleagues @SMUPsychology as part of the new @smuresearch TEIL research cluster (Technology Enhanced & Immersive Learning). #SMU@smusimmons@SMUDedman
Special acknowledgements to the waitress who mispronounced a surname, leading to a rich discussion, collaboration, and fantastic finding about some top down effects on the traditionally bottom-up process of reading
Do you f*#king love to swear? Or do you avoid that 💩? New work with @lynnkperry shows adults who are uncomfortable swearing make errors pronouncing novel words that could rhyme with taboo words (kuck) vs. neutral words

@kelsey_e_klein I have a similar protocol to @KatieRGordon - anything they would wear babysitting and parents would be ok with is fine. No shorty shorts or rips. We also have colorful lanyards with the lab logo and RA names/ID and RAs carry a clipboard when meeting parents initially.
