@FreeRangeKids So, in other words, I agree with you that it's good for kids to have free time to play outside. I agree that using screens as a babysitter should be limited and understood. I disagree that the existence of phones is what makes the supervised/overscheduled life "possible."

@FreeRangeKids The role of "phone" in this is not obvious to me. I was driven to a ton of activities (music lessons, etc.), but the point was not about keeping me busy, it was about letting me do the things I wanted to do. TV may have played some of the role you're describing here at home.

@AmyNielsen06 Wait. Is anger a choice? What does that mean? My impression is that emotions are emotions and it’s better to figure out how to express them than to choose to ignore them. Being unhappy with how a game ends or meeting people you don’t want to meet seems reasonable to me. Isn’t it?

@keetmuise Yes, many do. It is also common to walk outside barefoot in the summer, so really as far as bringing in dirt, we do it with or without shoes.

@bycourtneym When this advice was given to me, they also advised to choose for them without further discussion if they didn't choose one of the two options. (I didn't follow this advice, but that was an important part of it if you're really trying to follow it.)

@AutisticCallum_ As far as I know, something like, "What?" or "What do you need?" works as an answer in this case (implies a general willingness to help without committing before knowing the specifics).

@elawreads When my mom was in HS it counted. When I was in HS, you could only get A, P, or F. P (pass) didn't count in your GPA. I expect it varies from school to school.

@SuzanneLipshaw So, in other words, I can't imagine/remember what thinking was like pre-words (as an infant), but I can remember what it was like once I could speak, but before I could read (roughly ages 2-6) and would say it remains similar now.

@ReluctantBadger @AutisticCallum_ How young are the "younger people" in this case? I see adults tell children to stop making excuses more often than the other way around (and, to be fair, sometimes people may be making excuses or at least not attempting to consider other people's perspectives).

@Candlewick There was a 1000 books before kindergarten program at our local library. For my first born, I carefully wrote down each book we'd borrowed from the library before returning it so I didn't count a book twice, but I think a lot of other people were counting re-reads.

@Candlewick It feels like if it's your own goal, you can make whatever rules you want. Why would I want to control someone else's goal? If you goal is to read x new books this year, then it doesn't. If your goal is to read x books this year, I guess it does. I don't make this kind of goal.

@laurenancona My wife really wanted this kind of bowl. After not being able to find any, she discovered a set of four in a cabinet in our basement. We joke about the house providing them or the ghosts in our house being very friendly.
