My math club kids have suggested that the President of Math Club should be known as the Prime Minister, and I'm kinda disappointed that this never occurred to me.
Students are constantly feeling rushed. Before they’re able to master a skill or concept, they get assessed and are told to move on. It leads to high anxiety and a low sense of self worth. We need to worry less about “staying on pace” and care more about depth of understanding.
It makes me sad when a teacher assistant says “I’m just a para” when they introduce themselves to me…we CANNOT do our jobs without support staff. They are the backbones of our schools. No one is “just” anything on your staff. Make sure your support staff feel encouraged & loved.

5yo daughter’s teacher called her “a mathematician” yesterday.
She was so excited to tell us when she got home and said it was the best thing about her day. She spent the evening doing number bonds independently & absolutely loving it.
Never underestimate the power your words.
When we take away recess, unstructured play, & physical activity from children, we also take away creativity, innovation, and imagination. We also take away opportunities to develop social skills, self regulate emotions, and increase achievement.
