In April, when my school had 3-8 students per in-person class our school still saw 10 COVID cases, several parents died.
Next week, our district will go back to having 30-40 students per class and our COVID numbers are far worse than last year.
We need a virtual option NOW!
My family fled Chile in 1976 after the U.S. backed coup deposed elected socialist President Salvador Allende & installed Pinochet.
My family’s experience and my passion for my community are why I’m running for Congress.
From Allende to Gallardo, Venceremos.
We will overcome.
My favorite part of being a teacher was watching young people develop language skills to talk about capitalism, racism, & classism. Seeing students describe their own experiences in ways they never have before is like watching a bird take flight for the first time, healing.

Last year, my Cultural Studies students polled their classmates and I can’t stop thinking about the results of 1 question:
Do you worry about or think about being harassed by the opposite sex?
Boys: 100% said “no”
Girls: 98% said “yes”
Public schools are not failing students.
Public school teachers are not failing students.
The system is failing public schools, teachers and students.
Stop saying public schools and teachers are failing students when the system is setting them up to fail.
