Very pleased to share @findingtheflex 80 second animation on flexischooling. Reminder: it’s a child centred early intervention keeping more children on roll in mainstream schools and accessing a full education https://t.co/JhbNbMEEgM
@BarbaraBleiman This is a useful reminder, thank you. I’m afraid it’s being compounded by the way English is increasingly being taught. Here, for example, is the ‘grade 9 exemplar’ on AIC given to my year 10 daughter by her teacher 😭
@AdrianBethune@AndyNelson1977 Hard agree. The lack of things to ‘do’ at break and lunchtime directly impacted my girls’ wellbeing in year 7. They’re in a girls’ school where tight, exclusive groups quickly develop and there’s little to diffuse the intensity of these.
The SEND system needs reform and I welcome Government action.
The proposals set out today aim to deliver the better and earlier support our children deserve.
Take part in the consultation — responses close at 11:59pm on 18 May 2026.

Goosebumps! People often ask, is Shakespeare still relevant? Here is a great example, from the Steven Colbert Show, in which Sir Ian McKellen delivers an extraordinary speech. Shakespeare’s words are timeless, urgent and important.

@jdurran It’s having a profound impact on her. As she says ‘why can’t I decide what to think?’ English lessons have become something to withstand and she’s now adamant she won’t do A-level 😢But I expect the approach gets more kids over the line with the all important 4/5.
Yesterday I spent 2 hours on a social care referral, 45 mins sitting with a child self harming and trashing a room, 45 mins on medical plans, an hour doing home visits, 25 with a dad and son (severe SEN, no English, both illiterate) finding food banks.
But, attendance targets…
"It's not burnout. It's despair."
This phrase has come up again and again in coaching conversations with school leaders lately. It has weight. It has truth. 1/
English teachers – you know all about the pressures & strains on the subject, the problems with GCSE English, the way knowledge in our discipline works & how it differs from other subjects. I'd urge you to apply, to give an informed voice on the subject, curriculum & pedagogy!
@hugh_lester@patriciabirket1@smithsmm Hugh, that’s helpful - thank you. They’re doing AIC and have been told no marks for context. My understanding is no AO3 for poetry and no unseen? And no marks awarded for context in the 19th C text? If you have a handy link to the most recent spec that would be fab! 🙏🏻
@patriciabirket1@smithsmm Yup, I do! I’m sure you do everything you can and feel heartened by your comment. Her teacher is young and inexperienced and doing her best. They’ve moved to EDUQAS at her school (no context) which I think has dulled it down more for her.
@shabanahfazal@smithsmm That’s really kind, thank you. I’m a former English teacher too. I’ve seriously contemplated doing a bit with her at home and entering her a year early because this approach is constraining her thinking and making her miserable.
Where's the curiosity? @educationgovuk@Ofstednews
"....48 per cent of our 14-year-olds disliking school compared to an international average of 20 per cent."
Where children's wellbeing is ignored, the system works for very few.
