On this day, September 30, 2000, Muhammad al-Durrah, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, was killed by the IDF in Gaza. He was being sheltered by his father, Jamal (pictured), but was gunned down by a barrage of bullets while being filmed. The frames of him hiding behind his father and then lying lifeless became some of the most well-known images of the Second Palestinian Intifada against the decades old Israeli occupation.

Israel initially accepted responsibility for the killing, but later changed course and denied it, claiming either that he was killed by Palestinians or that he was never killed at all. One pro-Israel activist even claimed that the France 2 camera crew staged the incident, until the activist was convicted of defamation.

When Israel invaded again in 2023, they killed several more members of the al-Durrah family. Jamal stated: “Israel targeted the homes of my brothers, killing my two brothers, my brother’s wife, and his only daughter. Dozens of my neighbors have also been killed, mostly children. Israel does not target military objectives. They kill civilians with Western weapons.”
