Honest response to another disappointment or difficulty:
"God, I'm so weary, so beaten down by yet another struggle. Please help me trust you and give me the strength to keep going."
Cynical response to another disappointment or difficulty:
"Of course this would happen to me. Everything bad happens to me. "
It's important to recognize the difference. One leads us closer to the Lord, the other sows seeds of bitterness.
There’s a lot of good noise (music, podcasts, information, etc), but I fear that I’ve forgotten how to function without it. Even worse, there’s little room for the whispers of the Spirit when the noise is always there to drown it out.
Silence should promote peace, not panic. I pray the Lord will redeem the silence to once again be the gift it’s meant to be.
"Even if he doesn't fully free us from our inner mental turmoil, Jesus is still at work within it as we lean on him.
Only with the Spirit's help is it possible to experience a level of spiritual peace and rest amidst feelings of physical and mental unrest."

Chronic illness will either turn you bitter and hopeless or you will learn how to keep living, despite pain and limitations changing everything about the life you once knew.
We must learn to live in the constant tension of acceptance of what is while not losing hope of the healing that might still come (even if only by degrees).
Don’t miss the good God has for you by longing for a life you haven’t been given.

Q1: What would you tell a reader approaching this book for help for the first time?
Christian married couples...
Here's a freeing truth: You can't change your spouse, no matter how creative your tactics may be.
But God can.
If we take our eyes off of our spouse's need to change and instead ask God to open our eyes to our own need for growth, we just might get out of the way for the Lord to work in them in ways we never could. Then lay your hurt, longings, and desire for marital healing before the Lord. In God's hands, he can change your spouse's heart in the way HE sees best. Either way, he will change your heart in the process, leading to greater freedom, peace, and joy, no longer contingent on your spouse.

Reading the words that my teen son has written as he shares some of his story in a parenting book I’m writing (for those navigating neurodivergence/mental illness) is enough to leave me in a ball of tears on the floor.
“However, as I look back, even though I struggled to believe and receive the love my parents assured me of, deep down, their unwillingness to give up on me spoke louder than words. I couldn’t understand it at the time, but no matter how bad things got, they would remind me that they’d never stop fighting for me. And their unwillingness to give up on me is what eventually led me to believe that maybe Jesus wouldn’t either.”
Parents—no matter how bleak things may seem, don’t give up.
We have access and opportunity at our fingertips like never before, and yet it only seems to be leaving us increasingly discontent with the call to quiet, every day faithfulness. Are we so intoxicated by the desire and ability to reach for greatness, even if it’s greatness for the Lord, that the value of daily faithfulness has grown dull—dare I say, an inconvenience to something truly “purposeful”?
What a true privilege it was to sit down with Joni Eareckson Tada. I encourage you to watch it until the end. I truly believe her words will leave you changed.

@jasonkovacs@drantbradley Yes, we often think of life as an expected ocean of ease while we occasionally stumble upon islands of affliction that temporarily impede our smooth sailing. It’s actually the other way around. If we see that, we’ll be less thrown when it comes and less surprised when it lasts.

In this online space, we need to remember Solomon’s wise words.
“The one who corrects a mocker will bring abuse on himself…Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you. Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still…” Proverbs 9:7-9
