The project to build a new emergency services building for fire, ambulance and police responders in Saranac Lake got a $4.5 million boost from the federal government over the weekend after Congress passed a consolidated appropriations act.

All fire departments around the Tri-Lakes are volunteer-based. Over the last few years, each has seen a trend of fewer people signing up to do this work. Fire chiefs worry that residents could be forced to foot the bill if this trend continues.

High winds ushered in a cold front and a snow storm on Wednesday, causing a 50-degree swing over the course of a couple of hours and knocking down trees around the Tri-Lakes. Hundreds lost power and one home was seriously damaged by a tree.

Firefighters knocked down a fire at a home on Grandview Avenue in Lake Placid Sunday afternoon. Firefighters say no one was injured, but the house has significant damage.

A snowmobiler who went through the ice between Lake Flower and Oseetah Lake was rescued and released in good health Monday. Saranac Lake Fire Chief Brenden Keough is now urging caution on the ice because of the recent unseasonably warm weather.

On November 17th, 2023 at 10:18 PM, SLVFD was Dispatched to the report of a stranded pontoon boat on Oseetah Lake with one occupant potentially hypothermic. SLVFD responded with 9 members, two trucks and two boats, Marine 2 and Airboat Marine 4.
