The ongoing Iranian response appears different from the earlier tit-for-tat exchanges. The primary target appears to be Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, with additional launches directed toward U.S. naval assets in and around the Persian Gulf.

The exact casualties and damage from the earlier U.S. strike on Larak Island remain unclear. More significant, however, is the operationalisation of bases across Western and Central Iran. Even though the launches from each site are small, the broader dispersed network being operationalised suggests that it could be much wider retaliation than the current one, including targeting other sites in the region as well.

Currently, the available footage from Jordan doesn't show any manoeuvrable missiles or direct hits. Considering both factors, the objective is likely to deplete the interceptors in Jordan, especially against the backdrop of fresh supplies from Germany and other countries and to demonstrate the operational status of missile facilities and bases across the depth of Iran, especially against the backdrop of a 'Pre-emptive' strike by the US enabled by extensive ISR.

Several actors possess advanced weapons that have not yet been used in the conflict. These weapons have reportedly been delivered down to the tactical level, while authorization for their use remains with operational command.

How does a smaller adversary fight a much larger foe?

1. Limit the zone of conflict to their size advantage like Spartans did against Persians.

2. Limit the mobility of foe as in Battle of Agincourt in hundred years war.

3. Strike the decision making body and nerve center as in David vs Goliath.

4. Massive difference in standoff capability such as Parthians had over Romans in Battle of Carrhae.

For a country like Pakistan we have to use all four to counter India in any future conflict where India now will like to play to its advantages as evident by latest chatter amongst its retired generals and strategists.

The how;

1. Pakistan needs to keep its war fighting doctrine ambiguous. The lines of Nuclear and conventional should blur earlier. Reducing the space under nuclear overhang. This is our narrow pass. In doing so we reduce the volume of conflict and keep it proportional to our size.
A separate rocket force is a step against this and will not be favourable to us in long run.

2. In today's day and age our drone forces and their integration needs to he significantly more than India. India has a good Armour Corps. Its armour thrust in Punjab and Sindh plains/desert needs to be bogged down with superior drone usage.

3. Earlier on in the conflict Pakistan must target important decision making nodes at all levels. Command and Control (C2) Nodes and Operations Rooms as well as disabling NCW frameworks. Pakistan should rest assured in the next phase India will try this first. We must not wait and be dictated the pace of conflict. Hit hard on this early. PAF needs to be utilised as well as ither stand off munitions.

4. This brings to the last Stand off capabilities. Pakistan must have significant emphasis on our standoff capabilities. Conventional rockets and missiles both in quality and quantity matter. As we have seen in US-Israel-Iran conflict. Long range artillery such as SH -15 also comes under this. Both Conventional and Strategic vectors should be under same command for keeping ambiguity. Production capacity should be ample so that maximum damage is done from distance before contact. Disrupting staging areas, C4I nodes and Command and control centers. PAF likewise has a role to play here far and beyond IAF.

We need work in all these 4 venues as the next conflict will be of high volume and breadth. India will try to use its advantages and will not limit to airbattles and standoff strikes like before and neither would we. Every additional conflict moving forward will start at one rung of escalation above the previous.
