IOC statement on athletes’ safe passage🌏
In a world shaken by conflict, division and tragedy, with lives being lost and tragedies experienced by so many, now more than ever, the IOC stands firm in its belief that sport must remain a beacon of hope👇

Singapore is great if you make a lot of money, typically foreign expats. But when you talk to "normal locals" it's less groovy. Doesn't mean it sucks (though taxi drivers will tell you it does), but it's a far less rosy picture than this post would make you believe, for that middle class and below. Low tax doesn't mean much on average-to-low income, and great services still cost a lot. Rent is crazy, unless you can get into public/subsidized housing, which Singapore does have.
With its low tax rates, and stable--some would say authoritarian--government, a close ally of the US with good relations with China, it's a great place for global companies to put their Asia headquarters. And that's exactly what they've done. Even some global Chinese companies prefer to put their Asia HQs in Singapore for ease of international payments.
As such though, while it can be fun for a few years for a Western expat sent their by their company, especially those first time in Asia, most of those people I've talked to don't plan on retiring in Singapore and living there for the rest of their lives. The city is too small, and culture ultimately is limited and very competitive, the turnover of people in and out high, and it's all about money. Expats everywhere often live in bubbles, but in Singapore it's extreme. Eventually it gets old and people crave something more authentic.
Singapore is great for Westerns who don't want to dive into East Asia dry. Go to Singapore, get a taste of Asia, get "wet" and then dive into something like Shanghai or Ho Chi Minh City, China, Vietnam, Japan, whatever.
And then there are those who go the other way, from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore. In the Asian Expat community, Singapore is known as Asia-Light, and Westerners who prefer Singapore to, say, Shanghai or Ho Chi Minh City, are considered, well, what's the word. Shallow?

i'm comically impressed that people are coping on deepseek by spewing bizarre conspiracy theories -- despite deepseek open-sourcing and writing some of the most detail oriented papers ever.
