Jimmy Butler only got 1 JuCo scholarship out of high school. He accidentally got scouted by Marquette. Was deemed as not a max player by 3 NBA franchises.

Erik Spoelstra was a video coordinator for the Heat. People wanted him fired in year 1 as a Head Coach with the Heatles.

Two franchises picked Mike Conley and Goran Dragic to be their lead guards over Kyle Lowry. He went on to make 3x as many All-Star teams as both and become maybe the GOAT of a franchise and a champion.

Bam Adebayo is consistently one of the most underrated defenders in hoop. He’s never finished top 3 in DPOY voting.

Caleb Martin, Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, Duncan Robinson all went undrafted. Martin was waved by the Hornets 2 seasons ago. Kevin Love was a buyout guy.

A lot of people have been asking the Heat players and coach if they hear the skepticism and doubt around them and they’ve all answered with a resounding “No, we do not care”.

Why? Because the majority of them have been counted out and doubted their whole careers.

That, imo, is what Heat Culture is.

To be resilient in your approach and unwavering in your confidence level.

When you put all of that into context — it shouldn’t be surprising that this 8th seeded Heat team that is comprised of these oft-doubted players is 2 wins away from the NBA Finals.

The technical, on-court aspect of how the Heat have manufactured this run and played within their own style is extremely important to recognize and highlight.

But I think the story around this team, it’s players and how they’ve all become used to being counted out, is equally as poignant. That’s WHY they’re as cohesive as they are. That’s why they’re able to play as such a team.

Because they’re all like-minded, consistently-doubted individuals with one common goal: prove people wrong.
