Women’s chief coach on holiday just before the World Cup — and the girls still fought their hearts out and exceeded expectations. Credit to the players. But where is the accountability? Do we really expect a team to perform at its best when the chief coach is away during the final phase of preparation?

Men’s team loses to a top team → “It’s a learning experience.”
Beats an Asian team → “Great victory.”
Plays good hockey → “Good performance.”

But here’s the uncomfortable question:
Are we building a team to PLAY good hockey, or a team capable of WINNING against the best in the world?

Stop hiding behind “learning”, “good hockey” and future tournaments.

The World Cup is not a rehearsal.
It is the World Cup.😎

So who is going to ask the difficult questions?
Who is going to demand accountability?
And most importantly…

Does anyone actually care?

Glad Carrick pushed back on this. It’s just so reductive. United problems were tactical, which Carrick tried to fix in the second half. Technical: they didn’t create high enough quality chances and didn’t finish the ones they did create; and they defended two set pieces very badly. And sharpness: a few players were miles off it after having no pre season.

Crap result, mediocre performance but the cry arseing on here. The sky is not falling in. The season is not over. United are not finished as a club. And the people (fans and media) who have an incentive to drive hyperbolic narratives should be ignored.

I mentioned in my preview of United for the season how United’s season unfolds completely depends on the tempo. I also talked about why the individual tendencies of the players are extremely important for Carrick. Because of his “freer” approach, he does not actually coach tempo incessantly like Maresca, Guardiola, or Arteta would.

It makes me even more worried considering Hull barely pressed United from their 5-4-1 block. There was very little pressure on the ball to actually rush actions. Despite that, the midfielders kept looking for depth runs in behind rather than pinning Hull for sustained periods and controlling the ball and territory.

Fernandes also needs to be taking risks once the ball is in the final third, not in the first 2 thirds of the pitch. If he keeps dropping and looking for runs in behind from United’s own half, United will never control enough territory. There’s a reason Arsenal barely play low-percentage penetrative passes from their own half. This has to be worked upon explicitly by Carrick and the staff.

As for the out of possession side, I talked about City and Maresca and why the 4-2-4 zonal block is simply too easy to manipulate. The same applies to United. Slot also struggled with the same structure.

A simple principle for good defending is that you either have pressure on the ball or you block space zonally. The 4-2-4 does neither.

The Arsenal and Arteta idea is far superior. You start in a compact zonal 4-4-2 block, then look to jump into a man-to-man press through triggers. You start by blocking space, then try to get pressure on the ball once you can.

United also struggled to deal with the wingbacks. A 3-2-5 will always have a +1 on the back 4. There are various solutions to dealing with it, with the most common one being to get one of the double pivot or wingers to drop into the backline to create a situational back 5. United were not prepared with any solution for this either.

Yes, it’s just the first game, but I expected a lot more from Carrick in the new season. I think there is a severe lack of explicitness and detail from the staff, both in and out of possession. It’s easy to confuse that lack of detail with “freedom”. United also had most of their starters available.

My expectation was that once Carrick had a full pre-season and some signings, we would see some evolution from last season’s approach. So far, that does not look like the case. I’m hoping to see improvements in the next game.

I am deeply anguished to know that the legendary colour of the Indian hockey team’s jersey has been changed to saffron. The iconic shade of blue of the Indian hockey team is not just a colour. It is an emotion associated with the nation’s sporting heritage.

For decades, this colour united us in hope, in victory, in defeat and in the pursuit of sporting excellence. We have cried, laughed, celebrated and stood proudly with our men and women in blue. Wearing the blue jersey our teams have won Olympic medals with the national anthem playing on the world stage. #Blue is derived from the blue chakra in our national flag. It is a symbol of our national pride and identity. The colour blue belongs to every Indian.

When the national hockey teams were struggling for sponsors, #Odisha created history by being the first and only state to support our national teams and our beloved game. Every Odia across the globe was proud of the state’s gift to national hockey. After 41 long years, our men’s team won an Olympic medal. Just because the government changed in Odisha, it should not change our national team colours. This is petty politics of the worst kind.

Our blue jersey is to us what the iconic stripes are to Argentina and the yellow jersey is to Brazil. It is etched in our collective memory. Any change in this colour, is a crass attempt to erase our priceless sporting legacy. National symbols are meant to unite us not divide.

I am given to understand that this step was taken under pressure from the BJP Government in Odisha. Those in authority may deny it, but the fact is that for the last two years, everybody in Odisha has seen the obsession of this government with changing colours of buildings, buses and even bridges. It is the only work that is happening in Odisha today. But now the same government has changed the colours of our national team. I strongly condemn this attempt by BJP Odisha to politicise a national game like hockey. It has deeply hurt the sentiments of lakhs of sports lovers across the country and the pride with which Odisha has supported the national hockey.
