Today, May 28th 2026, marks a monumental day in Canada.
On this day twenty-six years ago, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were laid to rest at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
The Royal Canadian Legion was determined to establish a resting place of honour and respect for one soldier, that would represent all. A key decision was to select the Unknown Soldier from the First World War battlefield near Vimy Ridge, symbolizing a defining moment in Canadian history when all four Canadian divisions fought together under Canadian command
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sacred site of Remembrance, representing all of the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Legion notes a renewed request to award the late Jess Larochelle the Canadian Victoria Cross. Private Larochelle performed selfless acts to protect others during an attack in Afghanistan and deserves this commendation. The idea of a military honours review board could help provide consistency and fairness. We will continue to advocate for this, and for Jess. We will remember him. Read more: https://t.co/D9VBoZp607

As the Legion took shape at home, Canadians living abroad also sought to support Legion efforts and remain connected.
In March 1926, the first Canadian Legion Branch outside Canada was formed in Spokane, Washington, when the British War Veterans Association reorganized as an international Branch. Today, the Legion maintains Branches in the United States, the Netherlands, and Germany, extending its mission beyond Canada's borders.

12 years ago today, Canada’s mission in Afghanistan came to an end. We pause to remember and honour all who served — and the 158 Canadian Armed Forces members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
For many who served, the impact of that mission did not end when the deployment did. The physical and psychological effects of service can remain long after returning home.
If you are a Veteran or family member in need of assistance, The Royal Canadian Legion is here to help. Our Command Service Officers provide free, professional guidance and support.
