On Saturday, April 6, a woman was brutally sexually assaulted as she walked near the Venice canals. Another woman was attacked nearby an hour later. A suspect was apprehended about a week later and charged by Gascón to the fullest extent of the law.

Councilmember Traci Park spoke out in support of the victims and the 4 years of frustrations and anxieties most Angelenos feel about our lack of prioritizing public safety for residents, families and children. Yesterday the LAT editorial board decided to write an Op Ed criticizing her.

One section of the Op Ed stated: “Crime in Los Angeles is real, it hurts people and the community, and it is a problem that requires constant vigilance. Just as critics of needed justice reforms are often off-target, so are those who argue that there is no crime, we don’t need police and everything is fine.”

This is one of the first times in about 4 years where I agree with the LAT Editorial Board regarding criminal justice. Here is the real issue though-charging one media case appropriately doesn’t make up for the thousands of cases where the media wasn’t involved, a truly bad person got less charges based upon Gascon’s botched policies, the public was made less safe and the victim didn’t receive justice.

Gascon fully supported defunding the police in 2019 and 2020. His management team supports abolishing the police. He spread hate and rhetoric that endangered the lives of many police officers - we now have multiple cases of people just shooting innocent officers for no apparent reason at all except for the fact they are police officers. Gascón did absolutely nothing to deal with real crime when he became DA in 2020. He didn’t prioritize public safety and he abandoned crime victims. He also completely demoralized the LA DA’s Office.

After 4 years, lots of damage has been done. Yes, Gascón charged the Venice assault case appropriately. But for 4 years, I haven’t heard Gascón or the LAT Editorial Board say, those blanket policies were just plain wrong, crime is real, it does hurt people and communities and we need a DA who is wiling to always do the right thing. Not one who just does it during an election cycle following wherever the political winds blow.

LAT Editorial Board-being critical of Councilmember Park’s comments also means you should be just as critical of Gascon’s day one blanket policies. I’ll be waiting for that Op Ed.

As you can see, Diana Teran was one of Gascon’s most trusted leaders. Now she’s facing 11 criminal charges brought by the state AG. This is yet another sign of Gascon’s poor judgment and failed leadership. #GasconMustGo
