This is not about "protecting children", every device already contains parental controls which will do that. This is about building the surveillance State so that a woke public servant in Wellington will get to decide what can be shown on the Internet and who can see it. Luxon must go!
Well Zelenskyy is certainly winning more money for that habit of his 🙄
@chrisluxonmp@dbseymour@winstonpeters Gentlemen stop sending taxpayer money to that coked up gonk.
Tonight, I joined a call with the Coalition of the Willing to demonstrate New Zealand’s resolute support for Ukrainian independence.
Ukraine must, and will, win this senseless war.
"There's not much point of having a govt on the right if your best friends are in labour", this today after Seymour let it slip on Friday that "some National MPs should be in Labour"🤔
@LASHFORD_17 Interesting with the last girl, Erica immediately spun it to the negative. I’d bet more parents monitor their kids social media access than not but that doesn’t play to the Nats narrative
Massive overreach. Regulators like the BSA have already proven that they will step outside their scope to go after somebody, the DIA will be no different because it’s human nature to trip on power especially in defiance of a govt. So if this goes thru, we can expect that NZ will end up like the UK
Stanford's bill will, in the limit, require ISPs to block all NZ access to international platforms that do not wish to comply with the new regulatory regime.
You may wish to get a multi-year subscription to a good VPN early.
Absolutely the most poorly informed speech’s I’ve heard yet from @chrisluxonmp and Ms @EricaStanfordMP They’re rivaling Jacinda for emotional manipulation. So far she’s admitted she doesn’t know how to explain to kids to turn off notifications. Currently they’re speaking to kids who have not been taught how to manage the algorithm. Education works. Whoever put this presser together needs to be fired.
MASSIVE THANKS TO @actparty and @nzfirst for opposing this stupidity.

I've had a look at the report that Luxon's claims are based on. https://t.co/QY4DX5YIIC
The whole under-16 social media ban is built on a seriously shaky foundation. First, relying on a single, tiny survey of just 540 teenagers with a massive ±4.2% margin of error, (that means the "one in three" claim is basically a wild guess) is a joke when you're trying to police hundreds of thousands of Kiwi kids.
On top of that, the consultation panel of caregivers was heavily stacked with women which has caused a major gender divide in the debate. While mothers are understandably focused on immediate harm reduction and panic about youth mental health, dads are calling it a total state overreach that tramples on actual parenting.
It's pretty obvious the government is just trying to score easy political points before the election by steamrolling ahead with a completely unworkable law that requires sketchy age verification tech and takes away parental control.

Screw you, @NZNationalParty . I was considering the 'Overhang' theory - until now. You're simply the Uniparty - my vote may mean nothing, but this nonsense and ill thought out overreach will cost you SO many votes. And yes, I have an under 16 year old - who will do as he damn well pleases to continue his social integration online. Come get me - arrest, whatever. Don't care. I'd love a day in court. Wankers. You imported this shit here once Aussie had a go at it., so you're cowards as well. As for the coalition? Fat chance of THAT working out in November. You told them ON FRIDAY. Cheap Ardern tactic. Oh, and my National followers? Have a damn good think. Because what's next is your adult Digital ID. Feel free to share, comment, or add your thoughts.
I’m not sure about ego cos in passing the two have aligned on different things but with two separate paths of attacking the same problem. It seems more like strategic party interest & this drive to differentiate one party from the other. I hope to see both NZF & ACT with a bigger chunk of the coalition pie cos National is like Nigel no mates right now.
@winstonpeters@dbseymour Comon you fella’s!. The two sharpest leaders in NZ Politics must be able to find some common ground to align & steamroll those stupid buggers leading the coalition govt.
FFS 51 coordinated Islamic attacks in Thailand. 🇹🇭 Anybody that tries to tell me that Islam is peaceful needs a donkey kick in the nuts.
Why southern Thailand has been rocked by over 50 coordinated arson attacks https://t.co/gfCeEWpzgk
🙏 #Thailand
Erica Stanford and Catherine Wedd have announced their under-16 social media ban, saying they’ve “listened to feedback” and are taking action.
But they didn’t listen to everyone.
In fact, they refused to meet with many of those offering a different perspective. A perspective that warned of the inevitable dangers of creating an online regulator.
The evidence from Australia, Europe and the UK should serve as a warning. This approach is flawed, likely to fail, and is Trojan horse for greater government control of the internet.
For all their talk about protecting our children, bearing in mind the Government has no children of its own, they’ve put the freedoms and privacy of every New Zealander on the chopping block while doing very little to actually keep kids safe online.
