A 9 year old boy wrote Elon Musk a letter asking if he could be one of the first people to live on Mars. The letter was written in pencil on lined notebook paper. The spelling was imperfect. The plan was detailed.

He had calculated (incorrectly, but sincerely) how many days the trip would take. He had drawn a floor plan of his Mars habitat. He had listed the supplies he would bring: "food, water, books, my dog." He asked if SpaceX could build a rocket big enough for his dog.

The letter made it to Elon's desk through a chain of assistants who each decided independently that it should go higher. The last assistant to pass it on said she did so because the floor plan of the Mars habitat included a room labeled "for my mom so she doesn't miss me."

Elon responded. Personally. The response was short and factual in his typical style, but included one line that the boy's mother shared publicly years later: "We are building the rocket. Keep drawing the plans."

The boy is now a teenager. He is studying aerospace engineering. His mother said in an interview that the letter and the response are framed on his bedroom wall. The pencil drawing of a Mars habitat with a room for his mom sits next to a response from the man who is actually building the ship.

The mission to Mars is sustained by billions of dollars, thousands of engineers, and decades of accumulated technology. It is also sustained by a 9 year old's pencil drawing that included a room for his mother and a question about whether the rocket could fit his dog.

The technical problems will be solved by engineers. The reason to solve them is sitting in a frame on a teenager's wall.

Yesterday, I picked my English Bulldog Loomer up from doggy day care. She had a great time at daycare and the daycare didn’t have any concerns about her. Loomer loves doggy daycare where she plays with her friends.

When she goes to daycare, she plays outside a lot and sometimes gets dirt on her belly, and as a bulldog owner, I have to constantly make sure her skin and skin folds are clean, or she will get severe allergies or hot spots. It’s a bulldog thing.

When we got home, I rolled her over and gave her a belly rub and started wiping her belly off with a wipe. While cleaning her belly skin, I noticed that one of her dog nipples looked very dark. I thought it was dirt, so I kept scrubbing it with the wipe and I realized it wasn’t dirt, but rather discoloration on her nipple from inflammation. It made it look dark purple/brown.

So I used my hands to spread the skin around her nipple and all of a sudden, I felt a large bulge. Under the inflamed nipple, there was an internal mass that was hard to the touch. It looked and felt like a tumor.

Naturally, I freaked out and immediately started to go into doomer mode in my mind thinking my dog was going to die. This happened late last night, and the vet was closed, and so I neurotically started to wonder what was wrong with my dog. I decided to take a photo of her nipple and the mass under her skin, and I uploaded it to @grok. I described what it looked like to Grok and then I asked Grok to let me know what was wrong.

Grok told me my dog likely has a mammary tumor and that 50% of these in dogs are malignant. Grok said it could possibly be cancerous. I freaked out.

First thing this morning, I brought my dog to the vet and begged them to fit her into their schedule after they told me they were booked up for the day. They were very nice and fit me into the schedule.

Well, a chest X-Ray and exam later, the vet calls me and tells me “ I believe your dog has a mammary tumor, and there is a 50% chance that it is cancerous. I recommend that your dog has surgery as soon as possible to remove it so we can do a biopsy.”

Long story short, Loomer the bulldog is having emergency surgery on Friday morning to remove the tumor so it can be sent to the lab for testing.

I really hope my precious dog doesn’t have cancer. I would be devastated if she does.
