₹54,000 Crore Lost to Online Fraud: A Citizen Safety appeal on Safer Internet Day!

Yesterday I attended the Safer Internet Day conference organized by our IT Department. The theme was about using AI safely, but what struck me most was a Supreme Court observation from the day before. The court called the fifty-four thousand crore rupees lost to cyber fraud in India "dacoity." Dacoity. Highway robbery. Except now the highway is digital and the robbers are invisible.

I have seen this firsthand in my work. Last year alone, people in India lost nearly twenty thousand crore rupees to online fraud. Those families lost their savings, elderly people who trusted a voice on the phone claiming to be from the police, students who clicked a link they thought was from their college. Our own Cyber Crime unit here in Jammu recently stopped a fraud where someone was about to lose forty lakh rupees. They were convinced they were under "digital arrest" and had to pay immediately to clear their name. Forty lakh rupees. Gone in minutes if the police had not intervened.

What worries us is how sophisticated these frauds have become. The criminals now use AI to clone voices. Imagine receiving a call that sounds exactly like your son or daughter, saying they are in trouble and need money urgently. Or getting a video message from someone who looks and sounds like a government official, except it is completely fake. These are not science fiction scenarios anymore. They are happening every day.

I meet people across Jammu and Kashmir who are excited about digital services. We have over a thousand government services online now. People can get certificates, apply for schemes, file taxes, all from their phones. This is real progress. But every time we add a new service, we also create a new opportunity for fraud if people are not careful. The problem is not the technology itself. The problem is that we have digitized faster than we have educated people about staying safe online.

Some basic things everyone needs to remember. Never share your OTP with anyone. No bank, no police, no government office will ever call and ask for your Aadhaar number or PIN or password. If someone creates urgency on a call, that itself is a red flag. Hang up and call the official number yourself. Check what permissions your apps are asking for. Why would a simple game need access to your contacts and messages? And if someone promises guaranteed high returns on an investment online, it is a fraud. There are no shortcuts to wealth, online or offline.

What I appreciated about yesterday's conference was that it brought together everyone who is working on this problem. The IT Department and NIC teams who build and maintain our digital infrastructure. The cyber police officers who investigate and stop these crimes. Students and citizens who are learning to navigate this new digital world. We all need to be part of the solution.

I want to thank @dr_piyushsingla for organizing this and for his continued focus on making our digital systems safer, not just faster. The NIC team led by Sh Jaskiran Modi, Sh Sanjay Gupta and Sh Anil Sharma does exceptional technical work that most people never see but everyone benefits from. Ms Mega Khajuria coordinated everything seamlessly. And officers like Albeena Malik at the Cyber Crime Centre are literally saving people from financial ruin every week.

The internet has given us so much. But it has also given criminals new tools. We need to be smarter, more careful, more aware. Talk to your parents and grandparents about these frauds. They are the most vulnerable. Teach your children to think before they click. And if something feels wrong, trust that instinct. Stay safe.
