🎬 Movie Review: X & Y (2025) | Kannada | Dir. D. Satya Prakash
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)
D. Satya Prakash, known for his distinct voice in Kannada cinema with films like Rama Rama Re, Ondalla Eradalla, and Man of the Match, continues his streak of narratively bold storytelling with X & Y—a fantasy drama that dares to explore uncharted emotional and metaphysical territory.
Plot Overview:
The film revolves around a deeply philosophical yet heartwarming concept—an unborn soul named Jeeva (portrayed by Atharva Prakash) finds itself in the body of a beggar and embarks on a journey to seek out his future parents. On one hand, there’s Kreede (played by Satya himself), a compassionate man who runs an auto-ambulance service. On the other, we have Krupa (Brinda Acharya), a woman caught in the turmoil of an unwilling marriage. It is Jeeva’s mission to bring these two souls together, to become their child.
Direction & Concept:
X & Y is possibly one of the first Indian films to tackle the narrative of an unborn soul seeking purpose and belonging. Satya Prakash deserves immense credit for envisioning a story of such emotional complexity and spiritual depth. The film is laced with metaphors and visual storytelling that reflects a filmmaker unafraid of experimenting within the mainstream format.
Performances:
Making his acting debut in a lead role, Satya Prakash delivers a commendable performance as Kreede—a free-spirited Samaritan with a heart of gold. Brinda Acharya as Krupa brings nuance and emotional weight to her role, capturing the dilemma of a woman torn between societal pressure and self-choice. But the real soul of the film is Atharva Prakash as Jeeva—his portrayal is both tender and affecting, anchoring the film with sincerity and innocence. Veteran actors like Doddanna and Dharmanna Kadur lend solid support.
Technical Merits:
The cinematography and editing stand out, particularly in sequences involving Jeeva’s journey. The use of visual metaphors and clean transitions enrich the narrative grammar. The background score is serviceable and supports the film's mood without overpowering it.
Where It Falters:
While the first half moves with promise, the second half loses momentum, leaning too heavily into sentimentality at the cost of narrative progression. A major drawback is the inclusion of songs that feel redundant—merely echoing emotions already conveyed through visuals and dialogue. This unnecessarily stretches the runtime from a potential 85 minutes to nearly 108. A tighter edit and better judgment on the music front would have greatly benefited the film.
Final Thoughts:
X & Y is an out-of-the-box cinematic attempt that deserves appreciation for its originality and intent. However, it's disheartening to witness the lack of promotional visibility. In an era where content is lost in the din, X & Y risks going unnoticed despite its merit. It’s imperative that the team takes promotions more seriously for future projects.
While Rama Rama Re still stands as Satya Prakash’s finest work to date, X & Y reaffirms his commitment to meaningful, rooted cinema that challenges conventional storytelling.
