Growing up, we had a neighbor who was always fighting with her husband. Almost every time, she’d come outside crying, so everyone assumed the man was the abuser. No one questioned it.

One day, my uncle noticed bruises on the man’s body. That was when the truth came out his wife was the violent one. At the slightest provocation, she’d hit him, then come outside crying.

To make it worse, she had a police boyfriend. Whenever things escalated, she’d have her husband arrested… and then show up at the cell with food, acting like the caring wife.

He died last November.

That experience taught me something: abuse isn’t always what it looks like, and evil doesn’t come with a gender label.
