'Figuring out students’ willingness to engage; this is as important as the knowledge in civics and citizenship. What are their attitudes, their beliefs? Do we believe in democracy? Will we vote? Do we believe in other peoples’ rights? Teachers play such a special role here.'
🗣️Dirk Hastedt, IEA Executive Director
🏛️ Deep and thoughtful discussions on the crucial importance of promoting democratic learning for civic and citizenship education, with emphasis on the central role of teachers and the need to support their work, at today's official launch of 'Experiencing Democracy in the Classroom'. It’s #EuropeDay2026! 🌍
🤝 IEA is a proud partner of the European Union, working together to improve education for young people across our continent.
➡️ Our International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) has supported educators for almost 20 years. Thanks to the EU, @EUErasmusPlus support is available for countries wishing to participate in ICCS. As a result, the study reaches students and teachers across Europe, shedding light on how the next generation views our world and their role as citizens.
In the last cycle of ICCS, we saw that the majority of students from participating European countries saw themselves as European (95%), were proud to live in Europe (94%), and felt part of Europe (89%).
