Big government is a buzz word that just means federal legislation that overrides state rights/autonomy. Any federal legislation that does not leave it up to states is an act of big government. Good or bad.

The important thing to keep in mind is that in the eyes of slaveowners, slaves had no individual freedoms. They were property. In their eyes, the government was taking their property. Now, yes giving rights is not big government.

In the eyes of the people who opposed big government, the thing that removed what they saw as their livelihood was a big government act. As was them forcing them back into the union. Its why some southern states still teach it as “the war of northern aggression.”

The south is full of racists. Even in the civil war, most southern republicans and democrats were both fighting for slavery. Regional biases took precedence over political opinions.

The first splits and swaps happened in the 1850s. By 1980 the switch had happened completely.

The republicans were absolutely the party of big government. If the civil war were to happen today, you can bet modern democrats wouldn’t be the ones fighting for the confederacy. Hence the ideology swap.

In the early days of America, the republicans were the party of big government, and the democrats were the opposite. It was a gradual change starting with anti-slavery democrats in the 1850s.
