Naspers is an apartheid company. They have not accounted for their role in building an apartheid state and profiting from an apartheid state.
Naspers is a giant. The company has a market capitalization of over R1.5 Trillion and is chaired by Koos Bekker. Koos Bekker has a net worth of over R40 billion.
Naspers operates in 130 countries and is listed on the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
It is Africa’s richest company and owns Takealot, Media24, Udemy, AutoTrader and many more. Naspers also owns 10% of Universal Music, 9.1% of Spotify, 5% of Tesla 0.8% of Warner Music, WeChat, KuGou, QQ Music, Kuwo, WeSing.
But the history of the company is one of propaganda and racism. Nasionale Pers (now Naspers) is a media house that was founded in 1915 with the mission of promulgating Afrikaner nationalism.
Naspers launched with the support of Jannie Marais, a prominent Stellenbosch farmer, Jan Christiaan Smuts, Louis Botha, and National Party founding president J.B.M. Hertzog. Naspers was strongly supportive of the National Party from its inception.
It was marketed as a genuine Afrikaner institution. During apartheid the company funded the National party and the party actually held shares in the company.
In 1997, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission requested that Naspers make a submission about the years between 1960 and 1994 (thus, broadly, between the Sharpeville massacre, in March 1960, and the first democratic elections of April 1994), specifically, the media's role during this period. Naspers refused to comply.
The chairperson of Naspers has been accused of monopolist and anti competitive practices. For a long time Mutli-choice had a monopoly on pay Tv in Africa. This was disrupted by platforms like Netflix and now Disney +.
Former South African Minister for Communications, Yunus Carrim testified to the Zondo Commission into State Capture that Bekker had played a significant role in irregularly pressuring government officials to protect MultiChoice's effective monopoly over South Africa's pay-TV sector.
In 2019 ICASA released a preliminary report on 15 April 2019 regarding the dominance of Multichoice within the pay-TV market. In 2019 Naspers sold multi-choice. However they still have some ownership through their shareholding of the UMG which has shares in DSTV.
The success of the company shows the influence of a few billionaires and how many economic winners in the JSE have
roots in the apartheid economy designed and funded from Stellenbosch.
South Africa is an oligopoly economy controlled by very few mega companies and billionaires. Understanding the size and influence of the oligopoly companies will help the public and policy makers create a competitive market economy. An inclusive economy.
