Bristol School and the Ofsted inspection.
1) The School have already explained that they postponed Damien Egan's visit because of planned demonstration. The school stated:
"On the evening before Mr Egan's scheduled visit, we were made aware of plans for a public protest outside the school.
"As this protest was scheduled to coincide with the end in the school day, we opted to postpone Mr Egan's visit to ensure everyone would continue to feel safe when entering and exiting school and to prevent any disruption to our students' learning."
2) Ofsted is purported to be a quality assurance organisation to improve educational standards.
3) When an LGBT author, Simon James Green was cancelled from attending John Fisher Catholic School - was there an Ofsted inspection then? No
4) When Jewish childrens author Michael Rosen was cancelled from giving a talk at a Jewish School in Hackney - was there an Ofsted inspection then? No
5) Ofsted is acting well beyond its remit - It is acting politically to stiffle dissent. Was the school to ignore safeguarding concerns that were raised?
6) We will vigorously oppose any attempt to scapegoat our members at Bristol Brunel Academy.
“Ofsted was extremely detrimental to every staff member’s mental health. What happened to be a happy, nurturing environment, turned into an unsmiling fearing institution. It gave us a short insight as to what Ruth Parry would have felt. Ofsted is random, unaccountable and dangerous.” - Alice Butterton, NEU rep, Byron Court school speaking in the Ofsted debate at #NEU2025 . #AbolishOfsted
This to me, as a parent, a learner & a socialist is so important. We can’t treat academies as something to ‘manage’, but as one of the systemic reasons our education system is failing society & our children. End academisation & take education back under local authority control.
Gove scrapped 700 school rebuilds in 2010—including RAAC-riddled ones—and then, as Housing Secretary, shrugged off fixing them. From cutting funding to collapsing ceilings, he’s managed to dodge responsibility at both ends of the crisis. Spielman and Gove, Peerage partners.

An emotional morning at #NEU2025 as educators shared the personal impact Ofsted inspections have had on them and their schools.
“Ofsted hasn’t listened; the government hasn’t listened. Rip it up and start again!”
Conference unanimously voted for investment in school improvement, not inspection.
The legends at @DisarmEducation managed to get their ammendment to the Palestine motion passed. Let's get the arms dealers out of our schools! #NEU2025

Delegates at #NEU2025 adopted a motion on campaigning for all schools to be under the remit of local authorities.
“The data is clear: academies do not outperform local schools. They only benefit the salaries of CEOs. We demand that there is a way for academies to come back into local control. Let’s give our children the education they deserve.”
Motion 22 as amended has been passed by conference ✅✅✅
