Someone needs to step up and save Group 1 basketball in NJ since the @Njsiaa won't do it.

When does someone write about what the Group 1 boys tournaments have become? Year in and year out at this point they are dominated by charter, choice or vo-tech. 10 of the last 12 sectional champions and now the last 3 group champions all are. @kminnicksports @MikeKinneyHS

For the second straight year a private school pretending to be a public school wins the Group 1 title by double digits. And all these kids are back for Thrive next year so real chance we are looking at three in a row. Nice work NJSIAA.

@CoachBsTweets Maybe I’m ignorant. I’m not a coach like you. But based on what I have seen on here the last few years there seem to be plenty of coaches (at least on the boys side) that agree with me on this.

The 12 other boys sectional champions include zero charter schools, one choice school (Ocean City) and zero Vo-Techs. We don’t have to lie and pretend those things aren’t a massive advantage in Group 1 or are happening to this level in other groups.

@CoachBsTweets So that can be the next thing the state can figure out. But ignoring the easy fixes (massive sending district differences which groups are supposed to fix) because of other issues doesn’t make any sense.

@CoachBsTweets It also wouldn’t be many schools to move down. The three biggest sections in the state are the group 1s (27, 28,30) don’t have to replace all removed teams to make numbers work.

@CoachBsTweets Other groups having people coming in for other towns is its own issue. Having schools like Henry Hudson or Keansburg or New Egypt or Wildwood with under 300 kids dealing with schools bringing in kids from all over the area is insane. Bigger issue in boys than girls in Group 1.

@CoachBsTweets Paterson Charter has won 4 of the last 5 North 1 titles. 3 straight years a charter has won Central. A choice school (Woodbury) has won South 1 2 of the last three years. Newark Tech has won 3 straight in North 2 after dropping from Group 2 (open Newark is its own issue).

A real chance that back to back years a brand new charter school from Central 1 appears and wins the Group 1 title.

None of the four Group 1 champs were traditional sending districts (2 charter, 1 choice, 1 vo-tech using open enroll Newark rules).

Another year, another group of true public group 1 schools that got screwed by the NJSIAA. Winners in the four boys Group 1 sections:

2 charters
1 Vo-Tech
1 Choice school.

Small schools with traditional sending districts are at a sever disadvantage every year at this point.

Is it that rules only apply to some people and schools? How else did 13 sophomores, juniors and seniors who played basketball in other places last year end up at a school that says you have to be entering grades K-9 to apply?

Is the notice that they do not care about rules or fairness? Why do the 13 sophomore, junior, and senior transfers not have to follow the rules to apply to the school? How is getting players from all over the state fair against real Group 1 schools?

Maybe someone can find out why the 13 sophomore, junior and senior transfers on their roster did not have to follow the same eligibility guidelines of anyone else who wants to attend the school.

@coachfox17 @NJSIAA Before that can be addressed the fact that they are currently considered a public needs to be. Charters aren't public. It is clear.

The thing is that by their own school rules, College Achieve should not be able to bring in the players they did. They had 13 sophomore, junior, and senior transfers. Here is their school admissions policy. Isn't special treatment for athletes not allowed by the @NJSIAA?

@coachknitty Clearly CAPS doesn't belong in that section. I don't blame the NJSIAA. This has never happened before. But it needs to be addressed this season. Schools that can bring in players from anywhere should not be participating in the state tournament with public schools that can't.

In South 1, a charter or choice school has made 3 straight finals. North 2 is almost always a choice school against a school from Newark where group sizes change so rapidly due to the rules about school choice there. A true public 1 competing for a title is getting more rare.

It isn't just College Achieve either by the way. They are the biggest and baddest but year by year life for true public Group 1s is getting more and more impossible. In North 1, Patterson Charter has been in five straight finals.

Well exactly what was expected came to be. No one at the state did anything and College Achieve wins a section without ever really being tested. Wins by 51, 58, 26 and 41. In all but one game they scored more in the first half than their opponent for the game.
