Under successive governments... proudly awarding fishing quotas to mate$ to trawl, net and rape what is left of the rare, critically endangered Māui dolphin - and the rare, endangered Hector's dolphin.

NZ fishing industry just keeps on killing critically endangered Maui and endangered Hectors dolphins
Refusal by NZ Gov to enact real protection of beautiful, native New Zealand dolphins is inexcusable

It is not uncommon for New Zealand commercial fishers to DUMP Hector’s and critically endangered Māui dolphins from nets.
This DUMP (exposed 2016) went unpunished.
Imagine the actual kill numbers when this behaviour goes unreported. NZ Govt enables endangered dolphin dumping.
They catch them and secretly dump them!
🚨 STOP netting in or around Hector’s and critically endangered Māui dolphin range!
“Since August 2021, 33 dolphins have been reported entangled or dead. Two of the incidents included Māui dolphins"

"They're trying to protect the fishing industry, they're not really trying to protect the dolphins... that's the honest truth of it. If they really wanted to protect the dolphins, they'd be protecting them out to the 100m depth contour." #SaveNZDolphins https://t.co/oODdmVt3lj
The Fishing Industry proposal to save the Māui Dolphin won't work because it relies on trying to spot them.
This research shows that even when they are invisible from above the water, they're there.

A 2012 expert panel of marine mammal science & ecological risk assessment specialists estimated:
⚠️ 5.27 critically endangered Maui dolphins will die yearly 2013-2018 (human causes)
⚠️ Fishing activity will kill 95.5%
Maui will go extinct. We must protect them.

Thanks to YOU, the petition to protect the Hector’s and Māui dolphins from gillnet fishing received over 130,000 signatures!! Check in with Champions Dr. Barbara Maas and Dr. Liz Slooten for an update from the New Zealand Coastal Waters Hope Spot.💙🐬 https://t.co/hnLvDUt3xc
Maui dolphin habitat reaches out to 20 nautical miles - large majority is commercially fished
⚠️ Trawling allowed beyond 2-4nm
⚠️ Set nets allowed beyond 2-7nm with observers
New cameras won't stop Maui dying in nets and we can't afford to lose a single one!

We need your help! The Hector's and Māui dolphins are facing extinction and the New Zealand government's proposed new threat management plan doesn't provide adequate or effective protections for these highly vulnerable species.

There is no certainty that fishers always see and report all fishing-related deaths of critically endangered Maui dolphins.
The financial disincentive to report (threat of fishing ban) is a strong driver for commercial fishers to illegally hide dolphin deaths.

Our environmental report card is looking extremely bleak. In New Zealand we have the highest proportion of threatened native species than any other country. Māui and Hector's dolphins are part of that picture. #NZOverFishing#ProtectTheOceans

Watch @jacindaardern's partner @NZClarke talk Hector’s and Maui dolphin extinction with @LizSlooten
Commercial fishing is wiping out dolphins worth millions to NZ tourism (we must dismiss @NZSeafood's greenwash)
Ardern’s man wants them saved, why won't she help? #SaveNZDolphins
100% PURE NEW ZEALAND EXTINCTION
Maui dolphin numbers have CRASHED to less than 50
Predatory fishing industry @NZSeafood and successive #NewZealand governments are responsible for Maui demise
Imminent #extinction on your watch @jacindaardern
PROTECT THEM NOW! #SaveNZDolphins
