A Coalition to Defend Educational Freedom in America (and save a small public college from a hostile political takeover). Keep politics out of our classrooms!
Two sets of causes, two assessments of culpability. But one is reality-based and the other is a fiction. I suggest readers lay the blame where it actually belongs: as with so much else about New College, with Richard Corcoran and his band of pirates.
Outrageous. I was at this ceremony. Nothing the students did merited any conduct violations. There was no organized protest, no attempt to shut down the speaker, nothing beyond the momentary disruptions of a few shouts and one brief, halfhearted chant. https://t.co/IRur72IdrD
Graduating New College students have completed an academically rigorous degree and deserve to have a graduation that celebrates their achievements on their own terms. Please donate now to support this wonderful event: https://t.co/tLQB4Vqh6x
Actually, the @usnews methodology document states that the Peer Assessment data were collected in the spring and summer of 2023, which means that the last 6 months absolutely could impact this metric, weighted at 20% — next highest category, graduation rate, is 16%
Note that this investigation is specifically about disability discrimination.
So when a certain trustee spouts off about abolishing the DOE, he should clarify that he’s mad about the College being held accountable for discrimination based on disability.
Who does that??
Important note here is that the previous president was on the job less than four years, and had already turned around what the president four years ago had gotten wrong. (See: Red-Flag Scandal.)
(Also see: Pandemic, while we're at it.)
Good morning,
I’m in Tampa today where interim New College of Florida president Richard Corcoran is set to speak at a Tiger Bay forum at noon.
Follow along for updates for @HeraldTribune/@USATODAY:
@richardcorcoran So you are saying that you knew ~30 were leaving, but instead of getting busy hiring new qualified faculty you denied tenure to ones who were staying and created a hostile environment for folks who had no plans to leave...
EXCLUSIVE: A federal complaint filed with the DOJ, DOE alleges discrimination at New College of Florida under BoT, DeSantis-appointed leadership.
The complaint calls for a federal investigation into New College’s leadership.

Ok micro-rant over. It just irks me to see stories that are rewritten press releases about topics on my beat that are soooo much deeper than that.
I need caffeine.
TLDR: New College didn’t just find mold and say “ok let’s send students to hotels” , they recruited more students (thru athletics) than their facilities could handle, gave athletes the best dorms, sent upperclassmen to the Pei dorms despite mold reports finding them uninhabitable
Peace and love, but if you’re gonna report on this you gotta get the full picture.
Mold isn’t the only reason New College’s housing situation is in the state that it’s in.
In fact, I reported on how the influx of athletes prompted this over a month ago

New College of Florida may have violated federal law by dangling increased pay to admissions staff for bigger enrollment numbers. https://t.co/JYG0VocCP6
