COACHES SPOTLIGHT: When you trace Tammie Reiss’ basketball roots, the transformation she’s sparked at Rhode Island starts to make sense. As a player, Reiss formed one of the most influential backcourts in women’s college basketball history, teaming up with Dawn Staley at Virginia. Together, they delivered the Cavaliers’ only conference championships and guided the program to three Final Four appearances, including a national title game run in 1991. That pedigree shows up today in how she’s leading Rhode Island.

When Reiss took over ahead of the 2019–20 season, the Rams were seeking a fresh direction. The program had endured 14 losing seasons over 15 years, including a (17–71) record across the three seasons immediately before her arrival. Winning had been rare.

That reality has changed under Reiss’ leadership. Before she arrived, Rhode Island had recorded just two 20-win seasons, the last one dating back to 1996. Since then, Reiss has delivered three more, including a 26-win campaign in her fourth season—setting a new program record for wins in a single year.

Now in her seventh year, Reiss has the Rams among the Atlantic 10’s top contenders yet again. Rhode Island sits at (12–2) overall, has opened conference play with three straight wins, and already owns a victory over a ranked opponent. Perhaps most telling is how young this group is: three of the team’s top five contributors are freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore Palmiré Mbu has been the engine of the unit, leading the team in scoring (13.1), rebounding (6.2), and blocks (1.6).

Reiss’ impact as a coach mirrors the traits that made her a standout player: leadership, competitiveness, and a winning mentality. At Virginia, she earned All-America honors and averaged (15.7) points, (3.0) assists, and (1.4) steals across three Final Four runs.

Named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2023, Reiss has the Rams knocking on a door they’ve never opened: the NCAA Tournament. Rhode Island has yet to make a tournament appearance, but with the trajectory they’re on, that milestone no longer feels distant. ✨
