The National Family Health Survey Data clearly shows that banning polygamy alone is not the only way to reduce the practice — and prohibition by itself cannot abolish it.

The sharp decline in polygyny among Muslims in Assam between 2005 and 2020 demonstrates that education, economic progress, and social development are far more effective than politicisation.

Assam is facing a crisis.

In six months, 162 migrant workers from the state have died across the country, in factories, construction sites, mines and unsafe living conditions. These are not isolated tragedies. They are the outcome of a system that has failed its people.

Across Assam, agriculture is weakening, wages are too low to survive on, and jobs are scarce. Youngsters are forced to leave home and take on the most dangerous, insecure work just to earn a living.

What is most telling is the silence of the state government. It has neither acknowledged the scale of this crisis nor made it a political priority, choosing instead to look away while lives are lost. The lives of Assam’s workers have little value in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s model of “development” that prioritises optics over people.

This is not governance. It is abandonment of responsibility, of accountability, and of the very people the state is meant to protect.
