One thing many people overlook is references. The UK job market takes references very seriously, and you’ll likely need them for more things than you think.

References may be required for:

• Job applications
• Renting a house
• Professional registrations
• Apprenticeships and internships
• Volunteering roles
• Care sector and NHS jobs

Before leaving Nigeria, try to maintain good relationships with your employers, colleagues, lecturers, supervisors, and managers. Don’t burn bridges because you’re relocating. It’s rarely worth it.

A strong reference from a former employer can open doors years later. Unfortunately, people lose opportunities every day because they can’t provide references, their references can’t be reached, or they submitted falsified information. I’m dealing with one currently and we are running out of time for him.

Different employers have different requirements. Some may ask for references covering the last 3 years, others 12 months, 6 months, or even longer employment histories. Be prepared.

Also, remember that your course advisor, personal tutor, lecturer, or university administration can often provide academic references to cover your period of study. You can get this after few lectures in the UK. Build good relationships with them and maintain professional communication throughout your course.

Another important point: no experience is a waste in the UK. Whether you worked in customer service, administration, healthcare, retail, hospitality, or any other field, it can be valuable. The key is presenting it in a way that aligns with the role and career path you’re pursuing.

The earlier you organise your references, employment records, and contact details, the better your chances of securing a job quickly after arrival.

And if you’re unsure how things work, ask questions. Nigerians in the UK are generally supportive, and many people are willing to share their experiences and guide newcomers. Forget the dragging we face online😕😆we have very supportive people here and most of them are off X. You meet most in Churches or Community events.

Prepare early. Keep your contacts. You’ll thank yourself later ✌🏽
