Be wary of reading too much national politics into the Walkley by election: incredibly low turnout, voting to replace a Green councillor who unseated Labour a few months ago then swiftly resigned, few students around in September.

Two by-elections losses show risk Greens end up in a pincer movement of their own if momentum stalls. As Burnham regains disillusioned progressives who went to the Greens from Labour. But at the same time having less appeal to voters in rural areas, losing to the Tories.

@sarah_owl3 @DarrenJohnson66 @juliasm18659356 Election fatigue is definitely a thing too, and there seemed to be very little leafleting/canvassing from any of the parties this time around. Also, we have a new Council Leader since May who is well known/popular, so not surprised that the traditional Labour vote held up.

@MrsHenders4652 @v_j_freeman 😂 That's the one. Unseated the Council Leader (who had done quite a good job previously) then stepped down.

Turnout for this was so low, so it's not surprising the traditional Labour vote rallied at the expense of the Greens.
