That stopped them in their tracks. It’s possible. But what reason would someone ha— oh who are they kidding, of course people have reason to be after their father.
“If they just want me as a bargaining chip or something, then what am I supposed to do? Even my room isn’t—
Hubert raises a gloved hand, inches from their mouth. From a distance, it would looks like he had cast Silence on them.
“Or,” he interrupted, “perhaps someone is attempting to use you to get to your father?”
She stated at her food for a moment, trying to think.
“I know my father would have people kidnap me, he’s done it before, but I don’t think he would want me dead, would he? I mean, I don’t think he would anyway, what reason would he have to kill me, unless he just wants to—
“I see.” He nods. Their jumpiness doesn’t earn much more than a few patient blinks.
“Regrettably, the method of disposal that was necessary left no room for interrogation. So. I was wondering if you had any inkling as to who would send someone after you?”
They jump, startled (though that’s nothing new), quickly turning around to face him.
“Oh! Um, no, nobody else!”
They take a deep breath, trying to steady themselves, though the formaldehyde smell isn’t really helping much with that.
“Thank you, again…”

There’s a dull hum behind them as they’re trying to get breakfast, accompanied by the sharp scent of roasted beans and formaldehyde.
“I take it no one else bothered you in the night?”
@GING3RG3MINI —difficult, but it’ll come back to them.
They shake their head ‘no’ at Sylvain’s question, staring down at the table. They’d nearly forgotten he brought over the fruit tart.
Slowly, voice still unsteady, they manage to speak. “Please, forget you ever saw that.”
@GING3RG3MINI —same move.
Close your eyes.
Focus on the dark.
Focus on the heat.
Focus on the taste, the smell.
Focus on your breathing.
In.
Hold.
Out.
Hold.
Slowly, they steady themselves. Their heart is settling back down, their breathing returns to normal. Speech still feels—
@0BSlDlANARlES Why isn’t he leaving?
They can’t help but admit, though, that his presence is comforting. Somehow. Ironically.
“Umm, Hubert? If you aren’t going to leave now would you mind maybe stayinguntilIfallasl— nevermind that’s stupid you still have hands on your hands go handle that!”
@0BSlDlANARlES “No! I would never want to inconvenience you like that! You probably have better things to do than to watch out for me, especially at this time of night!”
Despite their words, their fear is still very apparent. They’re still shaking, though they’re notably calmer than before.
@0BSlDlANARlES —attempts on my life in the last 21 years, I don’t want more.”
They’re thinking about all the assassination attempts, all the torture they endured during the 16 years before going to Garreg Mach. But somehow, they’re still calming down.
@0BSlDlANARlES Slowly, they peaked their head back up over their knees. The sobbing has stopped, but tears are still rolling down their cheeks. They’re still shaking, but they’re slowly being steadied.
“But what if it isn’t enough? What if another assassin comes in? I’ve had enough—
@0BSlDlANARlES —on why was there a man here are you gonna kill me too please don’t kill me Hubert plea—“
At this point, they’re in the fetal position, rocking on the bed, head between their knees, crying.
@0BSlDlANARlES And, having witnessed /that/, there’s only one thing Bernie can do.
They let out yet another loud, ear-piercing scream.
The hands, now limp, are just kinda sitting on the floor near the bed. And yet somehow, that’s not the most unsettling thing before them.
“What’s going—
@0BSlDlANARlES —knitting needle as a weapon? Do they resign themselves to their fate? Think, Bernie, think!
And what’s Hubert doing here? Is this his doing? Did he mark them to die?! Bernie’s shaking, their utter terror all but apparent.
@0BSlDlANARlES Bernie sees what’s happening in front of them. Bernie doesn’t like this one bit.
The only thing you can see in their eyes is absolute terror as they let out a blood-curdling scream.
The scream is reverberating in their own head as they lie frozen in fear. Do they grab a—
