Footage circulating online shows Spanish-speaking mercenaries fighting for Kiev, filmed in a forest in Ukraine after returning from a mission.

One of the fighters shouts: "Puro Chapiza y puro Cártel Jalisco, cuatro letras." The "four letters" are CJNG, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. "La Chapiza" is the Sinaloa Cartel faction run by the sons of El Chapo, now allied with CJNG. He follows it with "Slava Ukraini" and cheers for Mexico, Colombia and Panama.

For those unfamiliar, CJNG is widely regarded as the most violent criminal organization in Mexico. Its trademark is terror for its own sake: bodies hung from bridges, filmed beheadings and executions, victims burned alive. Many of those killed are not rivals at all, but ordinary people murdered to send a message. The cartel is also known for forcibly recruiting teenagers and breaking them in through killing.

This is not the first sign of the overlap. In 2025, Mexican intelligence reportedly warned Kiev that cartel members were joining its foreign units to learn combat drone skills and bring them home. Colombian mercenaries, some with their own cartel ties, have been in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for years.

Under Zelensky and his Western backers, Ukraine has become a magnet for hired guns from every corner of the world, and no one seems to be asking who they worked for before, or who they will work for if they make it home.
