Exciting to see US invest in win-win-win strategy on critical minerals - they just invested in projects that will recycle CMs from coal mine waste. Win 1 - get more CMs, 2 - without new mines, 3 - clean up coal mines in the process.

Remaining Q’s - says companies are key actors for expanding responsible practices, but doesn’t unpack difference between what privately owned & state-owned companies can do on ESG.
Would love to see this explored more in future.

Finally got down to reading IEA’s new Dec report looking at ESG impacts of critical mineral mining.
Hits – solid overview of some of the ESG impacts and risks they create for both mining & clean energy transition (100 pages long!).

Big step forward! Now BC high school students have to to take a mandatory Indigenous focused course before graduating
In Y1 of law school I remember professor asking us who had learned about Canada's history with Indigenous peoples in their HS - almost 0

Not much so far. The treaty has some requirements for environmental impact assessments of activities, but deep-sea mining is exempt. It's a concerning gap - if & when the world starts deep-sea mining, its exactly the kind of activity that needs these protections
As of last weekend, world has a "High Seas Treaty" about how to manage the earth's biggest remaining "wild west" - the open ocean beyond national boundaries 🙌. What does this mean for deep-sea critical mineral mining? (1/2)
Illustrates the scale of the immense amount of new minerals required to meet global climate goals, linked to much more mining/production, but seems manageable. Lot to unpack here - thanks for this excellent analysis!
How many tons of minerals might new clean power generation require over the next 30 yrs? In producing those minerals, how much CO2 may be emitted?

Many of us recycle. But do you ever wonder what the impact of this is compared to other things you could do to be sustainable? Here's a 2017 study out of Lund University showing what really counts, like flying less

G7 countries & India are negotiating a Just Energy Transition Partnership to help India's energy transition
For this to work for climate/workers, India needs a national action plan that will form the basis of negotiations. Otherwise.. 1/n
