Beneath a cabin on Vancouver Island, something lurks, hungry for Ava's arrival. Sometimes connecting with nature is the worst thing you can do.

TEN GREAT HORROR NOVEL OPENING LINES
1
It by Stephen King
The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years—if it ever did end—began, so far as I know or can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain.
2
The Damnation Game by Clive Barker
The air was electric the day the thief crossed the city, certain that tonight, after so many weeks of frustration, he would finally locate the card-player.
3
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.
4
The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
Like the brief doomed flare of exploding suns that register dimly on the farthest edge of the galaxy, the beginning of the horror passed almost unnoticed.
5
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
On those cloudy days, Robert Neville was never sure when sunset came, and sometimes they were in the streets before he could get back.
6
The Ritual by Adam Nevill
And on the second day things did not get better.
7
Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke
Four months to the day he first encountered the boy at Walmart, the last of Phil Pendleton’s teeth fell out.
8
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
The seller of lightning rods arrived just ahead of the storm.
9
Ancient Images by Ramsey Campbell
At last the pain became unbearable, but not for long.
10
Ghost Story by Peter Straub
"What was the worst thing you've ever done?"
"I won't tell you that, but I'll tell you the worst thing that ever happened to me... the most dreadful thing..."
Okay that last one’s two lines but, come one. It’s Peter freakin’ Straub.
I’m sure there’s a ton of great opening lines I’ve overlooked. Share in the comments. Start a beef.😄

I've been putting off editing one of my completed manuscripts because I need more research in heavy topics. But, I'm finally ready to dig into suicide, mental illness and the institutions surrounding it, meditations into other dimensions, and demons, just to lighten it up 😉
@MKWPublishing Glad you're back into reading again! Hope you find some fab books to enjoy 💜
My pile of research books has been starting at me for too long, so had to start. I really love the story I have, so I really want to polish it nicely.
If you like historical horror, check out this anthology. Tales that explore the dark edges of emerging sciences in the 1500s & 1600s. Amazon & Kobo!
Picture this: talking about great musicals to my besties. I say I want to see The Lion King because the ads look amazing.
Besties sit in stunned silence for a moment, then reveal to me it WAS amazing when we all went to see it together.
I don't even almost remember it 😢
Got another 1km swim in this morning - yay!
Then as I was meditating in the steam room afterward, I think I unlocked what's really happening in the story I've been working on and it just about shattered my heart. Oof, this one is about to cut deep and personal 😭
Jinkies, we're under a Tornado Warning 😬
Thankfully I snapped a pic of a baby bunny in the yard just before my phone said to get inside!
I too am now hunkered down like that lil floof.
