I am happy to share that my PhD thesis has been now published, focussing on the influence of galectin-9 and its corresponding interaction partners Tim-3 and VISTA on the immunosuppressive function of cancer cells.

I am very happy to announce that I have successfully defended my #PhD thesis today focussed on the immunosuppressive influence of Tim-3, galectin-9 and Vista by cancer cells against immune cell responses! Looking very much forward to what the future brings next!
Huge congratulations to One More City who recently completed their 600km cycle from Strasbourg to Munich in just four days for the ICR!
The money will support a second #PhD student researching #SecondaryBreastCancer❤️🚲

This study is focused on the differential expression of VISTA in human monocytes and macrophages in order to elucidate a putative role of VISTA regulation upon macrophage polarization and activation.

Here we report VISTA expression is controlled by the TGF-β-Smad3 signalling pathway. However, in T lymphocytes we found VISTA expression was differentially regulated by TGF-β depending on their immune profile.

Here we confirmed that soluble galectin-9 binds to Gram-negative bacteria by interacting with LPS forming their cell wall. This opsonisation interferes with the mobility of bacteria leading to phagocytosis.

Here we report that the involvement of HMGB1 in anti-cancer immune evasion is determined by TLR4, which recognises HMGB1 as a ligand. We found that HGMB1 induces production of TGF-β and therefore galectin-9.

Here we report that in human cancer as well as embryonic cells, the transcription factors HIF-1 and AP-1 are involved in autocrine upregulation of TGF-β1/SMAD-3 triggering increase of galectin-9 expression.

Here we report for the first time that V-domain Ig-containing suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA), a protein expressed by T cells, recognizes galectin-9 secreted by AML cells as a ligand.
