Empowering parents by sharing the insider knowledge of teachers. Helping you to navigate the complexities of the system and get the most out of schools
6/6While exam data is important, it doesn't tell the whole story. It provides a broad overview but misses the nuances. P8 scores may hide the vast differences between departments. Of course, they are also based on the previous five years - not a prediction of the next 5 years!📊
4/6 So…within a secondary school, expect a spectrum of outlooks, values and quality. From differing teaching styles to varying departmental morale. Your child will encounter a diverse range of teachers and departments, each with its own dynamics...
1/6 As you start to think about secondary school for your child, it is important to understand how they differ to primary. Secondary schools have about 3x as many students as primary schools. There will be as many teachers in a secondary school as there are students in a primary!
3/6 These middle leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the school's culture and operations. As much as the headteacher would love a standardised approach, each individual and team will interpret the vision of the school differently📚
2/6 They are more complex organisations… 🏫 In simple terms, secondary schools operate on two main fronts: curriculum and pastoral. Subject heads of department drive the curriculum while heads of year or house oversee pastoral care.
5/5: 🏫 The school itself matters, but no school is perfect. Sec schools are also not ‘singular entities’ - they are broken down into year groups / houses and subject departments. A ‘school’ is a collection of different departments which may vary wildly in outlook and quality!
1/5: 🌟 Choosing your child's school feels like a decision of life altering importance, right? Even worse, the application process can make you feel completely out of control. But how crucial are secondary schools in shaping your child’s future? Let's dive in… #schools#parents
4/5: 👩🏫 Individual teachers. Just like us with bosses, kids' rapport with teachers can make them want to go the extra-mile or give up entirely. Secondary schls will have 100s of staff - some they will like, some they will not. Different children will have different perspectives.
@naomicfisher Totally agree - as a teacher it was always important to help motivate young people to do well, without making the stakes seem unbearably high. My ‘talk’ was always, you might as well do as well as you can, but whatever happens you will have good and bad options
All schools have equal amounts of pros and cons (but in different aspects). The school you really want your child to attend and the school you really don’t want your child to attend - they won’t be as different as you might expect!

Just seen an incredible school musical performance. Mixed ages and involving the whole community in a tough part of London. Children and families beaming with pride. It is ‘requires improvement’ and average exam performance. This is why you need to look beyond surface level info
