@Stern_66 Battle of Poltava happened on the 27th of June. In the winter fighting and movement was severely limited for any army in the 18 century, hence most of them spent Northern European cold season in winter quarters.
@Arannatar Fun fact: this image of Gedeminas is the part of 1000-years of Russia monument in Novgorod. His descendants along with Rurikids and Romanovs were the only ones to have the rank of "prince" in Russian Nobility.
@PSch67931860@solsenois In shipbuilding, rocketry and nuclear tech Germany has barely anything. In ground-based system France has capable modern designs.
@LandsknechtPike Even in the 19 century It was pretty common for officers, especially from smaller states to seek service with major powers for career advancement. Danish-born Moltke was a Prussian general, John Paul Jones served in the Russian Navy, Maurice de Saxe was a French Marshal
@GanzeGeschichte Peace terms in 1813 were even more generous to France. If Napoleon surrendered then, not only would he have kept the crown, France would have kept Belgium and left-bank of the Rhine
@Saxnot463809@Stern_66 I do get when Germans raise these accusations against Americans and Brits or even Czechs who expelled Germans. However, I cannot blame Russian soldiers who had their hometown/village burned for having little mercy. Russian POWs were treated poorly since 1941
@escapefrommelos Positivism is also a religion in Brazil, like with temples. But I wonder how European occultism is doing now in favelas. I was shocked to learn that there are multiple footballers named after Allan Kardec -- French Spiritist of the 19 century.
@senko В 18 веке Польша сначала управлялась из Саксонии, а потом из Петербурга. В промежутках Франция ставила своего короля и присылала французских специалистов, c которыми воевал Суворов. Уже к началу 18 века Польша была объектом, а не субъектом.
@kevinnbass I think it is an inevitable problem for anyone who defines himself through activity/function and has grown up looking for external objective validation. That is why businesses always loved insecure overachievers -- they are controllable.
@FranseviEfendi Tatar actually had a different meaning. Traditional Russian name for Azeris is "Caucasus Tatars". Central Asian nomadic Turks were normally called Kirghiz in the 19 century.
@realKalos Chinese tourists come to Vladivostok to watch art nouveau. Vladivostok has a decently sized 19th century city centre and is populated by Europeans who interacted with China and Japan. You should visit some day)
@WojenneH Also armies of the period were not national armies of the 19 century. There is a fun description of one of the Russian factions of the period in Wiki, which lists a bunch of cossacks and irregular and then finishes with the line "10000 landsknechts with artillery"
@cornu__copia Can being fun and extroverted be simply an upper class stereotype? A noble would on average be more confident and social then a commoner?
