Shout out to LBHS Dr. Robyn Tornabene who presented as a panelist at the Hofstra Univ Presidential Symposium on Sustainability this morning! A celebration of our K12 work on Climate Change Education in our public schools! @Jostroff2@jengallagherlb@LBSchoolsNY@JMyersLBHS 🌱🌎
@NGSS_tweeps >20 years ago: My first sci methods class was taught by a forerunner in the field of multicultural science education. So grateful for that learning experience at the beginning of my career, shaped the trajectory of my teacher development.
@izzieteaches You just had 60 tasks added to your daily workload and lost 10 hours of the day you could have dedicated to accomplish those tasks. Now make some magic happen with that math and oh by the way smile and be charming while you’re at it.
@DavidKnuffke As opposed to mine which gave $1800/yr raise x 12 more yrs teaching I’ll never recoup the $ investment even at SUNY tuition. There should 100% be an agreement between state unis and public schools since the $ all eventually connects to the same pot anyway.
@HaldenwangMr Looks like fun! (Especially bc plants can be boring). We used semi-random selection of specimens in jars and whiteboards to make a quick impromptu cladograms. Was harder than expected but a good productive struggle!
@CMooreAnderson In language: Analogy compares generally dissimilar things along a shared characteristic...keeping that in mind makes the the term easier to remember. But I asked today and most students didn’t know what an analogy was. There goes that!!

@chatbiology Problem solving in genetics requires: pattern of inheritance, rules/symbols, meiosis, fwd/bkwd prob solving algorithm, math calc. & thought across ontologic levels = high cog load. How change in DNA seq impacts cell function requires numerous steps across space& time.
Lessons from Plants: When a plant is struggling we don't ask, "What's wrong with the plant?" we ask "What's wrong with the environment?" We need to position our questions the same way when considering K-12 students
@Scienergetic No issues with STEM/STEAM/STREAM — integrate science with everything! But keep the integrity of science. Best term to descrive the silly “science experiments” which lack sci. is the “Pinterest-ification” of sci.
Here is an example of how to integrate STEM with equity, diversity and social justice and help students learn about how viral diseases spread & the role (agency) they can play in keeping everyone safe.
