A new Canadian study reports only 2.9% of youth at four pediatric gender clinics detransitioned over a median follow-up of 2.4 years, suggesting detransition is uncommon. However, as the article explains, the follow-up period is too short, excludes adulthood, and doesn't reflect today's patient population. Moreover, with a 2026 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics systematic review and meta-analysis reporting that 48.8% of transgender and gender-diverse youth experience suicidal ideation and 26.2% report a suicide attempt, the stakes could not be be higher.

Before minors undergo irreversible medical interventions, we need stronger long-term evidence that these treatments truly provide the best outcomes.
