🦧 Orangutan Medicates Wound with Plant 🌱
In Indonesia, a wild orangutan named Rakus shocked scientists by using a medicinal plant to treat a wound. 🍃 He chewed the plant, known for its pain-relief and anti-inflammatory powers, and applied it directly to his cheek, like a natural bandage. 🩹
This act, recorded in Gunung Leuser National Park, led to full healing within a month. 🧠 This is the first time such behavior has been seen in orangutans, offering insights into how primates use nature as medicine.

This is a much-needed reform since the last one was in 2006. The last meeting of the Review Board was in 2015. If nothing happens, at least it forces the NIH to do what it should be doing and review its own work. Hopefully, we can fund a wider array of high-quality research instead of hiding it away or leaving it unfunded.
Facilities in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk, Dnipro, Donetsk, Kherson, and Odesa are within or near areas affected by the ongoing conflict. These are the ones that the US is willing to admit to. We must hope that the labs follow safety protocols and destroy pathogens if the area is unsafe or the the highly pathogenic research is being done on the western part of the country.
🌋⚡ Volcanic lightning happens when ash, gas, and rock particles in an eruption collide, creating static electricity. It's nature's electrifying display, turning active volcanoes into stormy powerhouses the same way rubbing socks on the carpet gives you a shock when you touch an outlet
🚨 Human Bird Flu Case Found in Canada 🚨
A teenager in Canada has been hospitalized with what’s believed to be a rare human case of bird flu (H5N1). 🦠 Health officials say the teen likely caught the virus from direct contact with infected birds. While bird flu mostly affects birds, in rare cases, it can jump to humans. Symptoms in people are similar to regular flu, including fever, cough, and sore throat, but H5N1 can be more severe. Authorities are keeping a close eye to prevent any spread, but the general public is considered at low risk. Public health experts stress the importance of avoiding contact with sick or dead birds to stay safe.

@therabbithole Some hospitals have more administrators than doctors resulting in more costs for patients. If you want to lower healthcare costs lower the number of administrators
💯 Absolutely! Questioning an industry that profits from illness isn't 'conspiracy'—it's common sense. A healthcare system focused on lifelong treatments over cures does raise important questions. Real critical thinking means asking if we’re prioritizing health or profit. #ThinkForYourself
🧠 NEW STUDY: Diet Can Reverse Brain Aging
Researchers have found that certain diets can slow down brain aging. The MIND diet, which combines the Mediterranean and DASH diets, emphasizes eating leafy greens, berries, nuts, and whole grains. Following this diet may help maintain brain health and reduce the risk of dementia.
This discovery highlights the importance of nutrition in keeping our brains sharp as we age.

🐝 BUZZKILL: Light Pollution’s Dangerous Effect on Honey Bees
Scientists are warning that light pollution, like bright streetlights, is harming honey bee health and behavior. 🐝 The constant artificial light affects their sleep cycles, making it harder for bees to navigate, collect food, and communicate with each other. 🌙
Honey bees play a key role in pollinating plants, so this disruption could have big impacts on our food supply. Researchers suggest using dimmer, warmer-colored lights to help reduce this problem. 🌍 Protecting bees means protecting the ecosystems that rely on them!

🦠 UK Reports New Mpox Variant Cases
British health officials have identified four cases of a new, more infectious mpox variant—the first time outside Africa. The first case was detected in London, with other cases in the same household. The variant causes milder, less noticeable symptoms, raising concerns about undetected spread. The World Health Organization has been monitoring this variant due to its rapid transmission in African countries.

🔬 Metabolic Enzymes in the Nucleus: A New Frontier in Cancer Treatment
Recent research has uncovered that certain enzymes, traditionally associated with energy production, also function within the cell nucleus. In this role, they are involved in DNA repair and gene regulation, processes crucial for maintaining genomic stability, which can be lost in cancer. This dual functionality offers fresh perspectives on cancer development and potential treatment strategies.
This discovery represents a shift in our understanding of cellular metabolism and its relationship to cell gene expression. By exploring the nuclear functions of metabolic enzymes, researchers hope to uncover new avenues for cancer treatment that address both metabolic dysregulation and genetic instability found in cancer cells.

@therabbithole@elonmusk This will remain the case until impartiality is enforced. Scientists and doctors used to lose funding and their licenses and be publicly shamed with retractions and apologies, and now they are celebrated for being partisan and producing lousy science.
@therabbithole The impartiality of our scientific publications is astounding and so obvious. We need to return to normalcy so that the public can trust what is published by these outlets instead of worrying about their political leanings.
The lack of concrete evidence and the growing evidence of the harm of these treatments are concerning. Every scientist, therapist, doctor, politician, etc., who hides data from the public or coerces others to accept them without data or in direct opposition to the data should be punished. This erodes the public's trust in these institutions and promotes bad science.
Good start to restoring trust in the NIH. Science should be open, transparent, and accessible to the public. When research and health policies are kept behind closed doors, it creates room for doubt and erodes public confidence—getting rid of the people who hide the science and make up conclusions before there is evidence need to go. True scientific progress requires openness and accountability so people can trust that health guidelines and studies are based on evidence and are in the public’s best interest. Rebuilding trust means ensuring that institutions like the NIH serve transparently. #PublicHealth #TrustInScience
Important points, but climate models themselves often lack the long-term, data-driven support needed to inform real decisions. Many models rely on assumptions and short-term data, leading to policies that might miss the mark or fail the most vulnerable. Without solid, long-term studies, it’s hard to know if these adaptation strategies work—or if we’re basing action on guesswork. Evidence-based climate planning must be grounded in real data, not just projections. #ClimateScience #EvidenceBased
