How British created untouchables.

British Indian military authorities discontinued regular Mahar recruitment through caste/class-based army reorganization beginning around 1892–93, with implementation occurring across units over several years.

Mahars had been mainstay in Maratha army. British did not trust Mahars and disbanded Mahars from various battalions.

Eleanor Zelliot’s historical work places the cessation around 1890–91 and says different battalions eliminated Mahar recruits between 1892 and 1895, while Constable identifies 1892 as the decisive policy turning point

Thus, the strongest proof is the combination of the 1892 committee proceedings, December 1893 Military Proceedings, the government’s reference to its own caste-admission orders, contemporary petitions seeking their rescission, and the observable cessation and later official resumption of recruitment.

Together, these leave little reasonable doubt that exclusion was a policy of the British colonial military establishment even though its implementation was gradual rather than a single-day statutory ban.

According to Islamic law, non-Muslim subjects of an Islamic state may live free from harm if they

- pay a special 'poll' tax (the jizya)

- comply with certain Islamic rules, specifically the penalty for adultery (stoning) and theft (amputation)

- distinguish themselves from Muslims by dressing differently

- keep to the side of the street when Muslims pass

- accept a lesser form of greeting

- agree not to build new churches or ring church bells

- do not build houses higher than those of Muslims.

The agreement is broken if the non-Muslim breaks the rules, fails to pay the poll tax, " leads a Muslim away from Islam", "mentions something impermissible" about Islam, or marries or has sex with a Muslim woman. 

If this happens, then the non-Muslim is treated as a prisoner and may be lynched - provided they do not first 'convert' to Islam before the sentence is rendered.

The judge treats two litigants impartially, seating both in places of equal honor, attending to each, and so forth, unless one is a non-Muslim, in which case he gives the Muslim a better seat.
