#scienceweek for year 9 will involve the fascinating concept of biomimicry. Biomimicry is when scientists model new ideas on phenomena seen naturally in living organisms.
An example is mussels gluing themselves to rocks.
Year 9s will be making and testing glue.

Science week at Plume will run from 20th to 24th March. Years 7-9 will be participating in fun practical activities all week. For year 7s it is all about aviation! We will be making and testing Brooklands Gliders.✈️ ✈️✈️

Year 7 were making an indicator from red cabbage (as shown in the picture) and comparing it to universal indicator when testing acids and alkalis. The student in the video is testing lemon juice using the cabbage indicator first, and then universal indicator. 🧪🥼⚛️

Year 10 physics students completing the GCSE required practical on Hooke’s law. Robert Hooke was a remarkable scientist who was highly influential on modern day biology and physics. He was the first to use the term ‘cell’. He also contributed to optics, geology and palaeontology.

Plume’s enthusiastic year 13 biologists welcomed the opportunity to engage with an outdoor classroom experience, organised by our Head of Biology Dr Georgiou and supported by Mrs Smith and Mrs Heslop.

They visited the beautiful Flatford Mill, on the banks of the River Stour, which is one of the first and original field study centres, set up in the UK during the 1940s. It is also unchanged from the wonderful, timeless painting the Hey Wain by Constable.

As part of our new Skills Assessments in year 7, students investigate whether different concentrations of salt affects the boiling point of the solution.
