Welcome to a “Down Day” on the R/V Sally Ride!! We are heading farther south today to find calmer waters and another upwelling site for the #pupcycleii research to continue. Enjoy the ride!!!
Researchers Adrian Marchetti and Ben Frieberger launched a second drifter buoy over the stern of the #rvsallyride to assist in tracking the upwelling filament as it drifts southwest of the Oregon coast.
Life at Sea comes with risks and rewards. The scientists participated in Gumby Suit drills after we boarded the #rvsallyride earlier this week. The water temp in our area of research is 9*C/48*F. A Survival Suit is a necessity though, hopefully, not needed during our cruise.
UNC-CH researchers, Adrian Marchetti (Chief Scientist) and Yubeen Jeong (Physical Oceanographer), launched the Holey Sock drifter buoy into the Pacific. The buoy will transmit GPS data to the ship and assist the scientists as they continue to observe phytoplankton responses.
Live Feed Friday! (Postponed until tomorrow morning Pacific Time; Noonish in the East) Here’s a hint:

As a rule of thumb, it’s always good to stay at least 50 feet away from the Reserve's feral horses. 👍
Stick out your thumb: If your thumb covers the animal from a distance, you’re a safe distance away. If not, you are too close!
Thanks, @NatlParkService for the idea!

After a week of nervous waiting by one bird, the #osprey pair is united and back on the tower rebuilding for this year’s nesting season. Oh how I wish the #uscoastguard would leave their nest alone after nesting season.

A reinforced multi-year nest would survive a nesting season storm much better than a nest that has to be constructed from scratch every year.
