One for Father's Day. The word father has Old English origins and is linked to the Old Saxon word fader, which has close connections to the Old Dutch word for father, vader. The etymology of the name was a clue all along!

I’m Jill—a teacher with over 20 years experience. My role as a part-time inclusion teacher and school advisor keeps me at the forefront of education. My best days are spent visiting Scode schools & seeing how Scode is transforming the teaching of spelling.
I kid you not. Just had a panic about missing a TEAMS meeting with a school. The teacher even rang up. I logged and was greeted by a Year 5 student who wants to be a teacher and get better at spelling. He asked my spelling advice & thanked me for my time. Tenacity in a nutshell!

@GuyClaxton This brilliant and so very true. After 20 years in the secondary classroom I have seen all of this. Kids just switch off and self-fulfilling prophecy kicks in.
Who are we? I'm Emma a teacher of over 20 years and one of the founders of Scode. As a child and teenager I struggled with spelling and reading. As a mum to dyslexic girls I was motivated to make a change. Scode was born as I started creating resources to support my daughter.
In honour of Dinosaur Day yesterday some etymology of dinosaur names. These names often have Latin or Greek roots used to highlight key features and paint a vivid picture . The term Dinosauria derived from the Greek words deinos meaning 'terrible' and sauros meaning 'lizard.'
The next government must invest in education.
The OECD recommended spend on education is 5% of GDP.
However many developing countries spend close to or more than that. Ethiopia 4.7%, Bhutan 8.1% etc.
🇬🇧 however, 3.9%.
To get us to the 5% average comparable with other developed nations would require a £20bn uplift in spends on education...
Every educator could find a way to spend that:
- repairing the school estate
- correcting school staff pay
- fixing the SEND crisis
- restoring school spending power to 2010 levels.
(For reference the last Labour government invested in excess of 5% of GDP in education)
We've just had 14 years of cuts

@drdavidajames The teaching of vocabulary can be fascinating for students. Embrace etymology. When done well students find the history and origins of words mind-blowing, funny and often disgusting. Perfect combo!
@MrsSpalding I loved the tweet. Positive experiences of a teaching career are so important to share especially for young teachers at the start of their career. I feel sometimes ECTs must think 'what have I got myself in to?
