From a distance, these beaches could star in a Scottish tourism campaign, wild, beautiful, seemingly untouched. But as we walk or boat in to clean them, the heartbreaking truth comes into focus: plastic pollution is everywhere.
Nature deserves better.
Some days it’s massive creels and tyres. Other days, it’s heartbreak in miniature, like this tiny bay in the NW of Scotland.
What we found was devastating: a shoreline blanketed in plastic confetti. Microplastics everywhere!
* Of course it should go without saying that preventing it getting there in the first place shop is the top priority. A lot of this material is likely quite historic but will continue to potentially harm wildlife for years to come unless removed!
Tiny bits of old degrading fishing net & rope made for hard picking at Badentarbet Bay this weekend, but if every person stopping to admire the views were to just pick up a handful of it to dispose of this summer, then imagine the difference we could make. #everylittlebithelps
We are having a great time in Scottish parliament this week, hanging out in the members lobby and chatting to MSP's about all things beach cleaning! Big thanks to all those who have dropped by for a chat so far!
Join us at the Scottish Parliament from 11th-13th March for the Scottish Coastal Clean Up Exhibition. Learn firsthand about the challenges beach cleaners all around Scotland face, from tackling remote pollution hotspots to dealing with the overwhelming volume of marine litter.
We would like to thank @uartlach for sponsoring our 3 day exhibition in parliament next week in the members lobby. SCCU: Raising Awareness of Beach Cleaning Challenges. The @ScotIslandsFed Tarbh Na Muraige (Flotsam Bull) will be joining us too. Please come and say hello.
480 metres of road verge cleaned on the outskirts of Edinburgh by 3 people
✅ 95kg of rubbish collected
✅ 890 plastic bottles & cans picked up
✅ 670 bottles & cans taken for recycling
Why are people throwing rubbish from their cars! Why are volunteers cleaning it up?
@PickerMary33197 We have a load of these that were donated as no longer needed for their original purpose...and they are strong enough that we can usually reuse them!
