As the temps are cooling, we are starting to switch over to our winter flying display team. Our magnificent Siberian Eagle Owl, ‘Altai’ is in training and will be in displays very soon.
Our magnificent Western Siberian Eagle owl, Altai. She has had a well-earned rest and will be back in our flying displays soon, wowing our visitors with her six foot wingspan and huge talons.
One of our resident Tawny owls is named after wildlife photographer Eric Hosking, who lost an eye to a Tawny owl attack. At 21, Hosking is one of the original members of the Scottish Owl Centre display team, although she is enjoying her semi-retirement these days.
‘Zizi’ the African Wood Owl moved to a new aviary recently and is enjoying the change of scenery. He’s looking great after completing his moult and will hopefully be back in the flying displays soon.
Winner of the 2023 Scottish Hospitality Award for Best Day Out is The Scottish Owl Centre in my Constituency at Polkemmet Park nr Whitburn. I congratulated Niccy and Rod when I visited. With talks, owl flights + over 50 different type of owls it’s so interesting - just off M8
Eurasian Scops Owl ‘Groot’ is the smallest member of our trained team. He can be seen glaring at our visitors from the tree in his aviary, in the Wee Owl World area. 😀
Our visitors often have to look very hard to find our Western Screech owls as they like to hide in their tree. This one ventured to the front for a spot of sunbathing. 😀
Sindar, our juvenile Long Eared Owl, is progressing well. He is spending some time in the display arena, getting used to the environment where he will soon be wowing his audiences. 😀
Our Ural owl pair were looking lovely sitting together in their aviary this morning. It’s a pity that a branch was in the way, but we do try to replicate the natural habitat of the species in their aviaries. 😀
Our Magellan Horned owlets are getting bigger by the day and can often be seen peering over the edge of the nestbox at the world outside. Mum Maggie keeps a close eye on them.
We have recently completed some new aviaries in our ‘Wee owl world’ section. Two of our trained Tropical Screech Owls, Poncho and Tequila, moved in this week.
Our young Snowy Owlet is now around seven weeks old and getting very adventurous. It can often be seen by visitors to the centre, as it explores the aviary under the watchful eyes of Mum and Dad.
Having lost our aged female Boobook Owl, we were pleased to find this young lady to partner the male.
She is only a couple of months old. Hopefully, she will breed next year.
