On this day in 1994, he beat Maradona's Argentina. Maradona watched from the commentary box, banned, fuming.
The most famous Romanian who ever lived is not ethnically Romanian.
He is known for his rebellious and arrogant attitude, aggression, unsportsmanlike behaviour and lack of discipline. But also for scoring one of the ten most beautiful goals in World Cup history.
His own country called him The King.
This is Gheorghe Hagi.
He was born in Săcele, near Constanța on the Black Sea, the grandson of an Aromanian shepherd who had fled Greece with 40,000 others and resettled in Romania.
His grandfather introduced him to sport with a ball made of horse hair. "When my mother gave me my first proper ball it was like Christmas," he said years later.
In a country where ethnic background is a deeply divisive topic, this man of non-Romanian ethnic origin became the undisputed national hero, the most famous Romanian who ever lived.
He was notorious throughout his career for his temper, his confrontations with managers, officials and opponents. He demanded a coache to leave the dressing room so he could speak. He punched furniture for motivation.
He refused to be managed by anyone who didn't earn his respect, which narrowed the field considerably. And yet the talent was so overwhelming that he was still signed by the greatest clubs on earth.
He played for Real Madrid and Barcelona. Then Galatasaray, where Turkish fans called him Comandante, The Commander, and where he led them to the UEFA Cup in 2000, the first Turkish club ever to win it. In Romania they simply called him Regele. The King.
For the national team he was everything. 124 caps. 35 goals. Three World Cups.
But 1994 was the one that defined everything.
Romania vs Argentina. Round of 16. Rose Bowl, Pasadena. 90,469 people in 40-degree California heat.
Maradona was in the commentary box, banned after testing positive for ephedrine ten days earlier, watching the country he'd led to two World Cup finals being dismantled by a left foot from the Carpathians.
Ilie Dumitrescu scored twice. Hagi assisted one, then scored the third himself, a goal so fast after Dumitrescu recovered possession that the Argentina defence hadn't even reset. Eleven seconds from his own half to the back of the net.
Rivaldo said later that watching Hagi play such beautiful football was what made Argentina losing enjoyable for every Brazilian in the ground.
Maradona's verdict from the commentary box, barely containing himself: "Romania didn't beat us on the pitch. We were beaten off the pitch and that's what hurts."
Hagi's own verdict afterward: "It was a great performance. They couldn't deal with our football. But I do still have one regret: Maradona didn't play. We really wanted to beat Argentina with Maradona on the pitch."
He finished fourth in that year's Ballon d'Or. Behind Stoichkov, Baggio and Maldini.
When Hustler launched a Romanian edition, their cover didn't feature anything from inside the magazine. It featured an exclusive interview with Hagi. He was reportedly mortified, saying it would bring shame to his parents and insisting he hadn't been told who the interview was for.
That's how famous he was in Romania. The country's most notorious publication led with him because he was the only name that could move more copies than the content inside.
He founded his own club, built his own academy, coached Romania, and in April 2026, at 61 years old, was appointed national team head coach again after 25 years.
His son Ianis earned 54 caps for Romania. His daughter Kira is an actress. His brother-in-law is former Romania international Gheorghe Popescu.
He never won a World Cup. He never won a Ballon d'Or. He never played in a World Cup final.
Thirty-two years ago today, for ninety minutes in the Californian heat, he came closer than most people even remember.

Everything you’ve learned about the history of World War II, was a fabricated narrative, built on half-truths, and outright lies… and that the British Royal Family’s connections to the Nazis, was deliberately removed from mainstream British history books.
But it goes far deeper and darker than that…
Senior Royals at Buckingham Palace orchestrated, financed, supplied, and armed, both sides of the war from the very start, and British King Edward VIII, British King George IV, and the sisters of Prince Philip of Wales - all financed and promoted Hitler, and the cancer of Nazism.
After all “History is written by the victors,” and the Nazis certainly were.
King Edward VIII, was an enthusiastic supporter of Hitler, and the “appeasement campaign” was a political attempt by the British Royals and Aristocracy to enforce a “Greater Fourth Reich European Union” on the British people.
He has been whitewashed, and written out of British history books, because it is this man – a British born Duke – who designed, and funded, the Third Reich.
He campaigned for a "united Europe" all his life, right up until his death in 1954.
One of the most senior British Royals was, Prince Carl Edward Coburg, who was a prince, and member of the Order of the Garter, an offshoot of British Freemasonry.
As a royal multi-millionaire, and favourite grandson of Queen Victoria, he led many British Royals, and members of the Irish Guinness Family to support, and even campaigned on behalf of Hitler.
After WWII, many of European nobility put on business suits, and became the creators of the “European Union”.
The E.U. is exactly what Hitler, and the traitorous Royals, wanted all along - an undemocratic Fascist super-government, which imposes taxes, and which the people have no control over.
British Royals and Aristocrats, such as Sir. Oswald Mosley, tried to convince the British people that Nazism would be “Good for Britain”.
But the British people were not stupid.
The working class rejected Hitler, and rejected the idea of a “European Union” dominated by Germany.
No less than Forty-Five million people were murdered in both world wars — and the British King Edward VIII — was being groomed to become king of Hitlers, “Third Reich”.
After all, “Reich” means “Empire” in German — and what would the Nazi Empire be without a Emperor?
In 2016, The Sun newspaper, published a still image of a home movie in which, Queen Elizabeth II, as a child, and her mother, are being encouraged to give a Nazi salute by King George VI.
The film proves her mother, Queen Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and her husband, King George VI, were pro-Nazi traitors.
The British government never wanted this movie to be made public.
Prince Edward Coburg, was Elizabeth II’s great-uncle, and her actual uncle, King Edward VIII, both funded, assisted, and politically campaigned, for Britain to be ruled from Germany by Hitler.
After Prince Carl Eduard Coburg, the next most senior pro-Nazi Royal, King George VI, who was a prominent Freemason, employed leading members of the pro-Nazi “Right Club,” into the top positions of his Royal Household.
It is now very clear that, King George VI, was running a pro-Nazi, secret shadow government, from within Buckingham Palace, while his uncle, Prince Carl-Edward Coburg, was grooming, and training Himmler and Hitler in Germany.
Their go-between was the brother-in-law of the Prince Philip, and the double-agent, Russian spy, Sir. Anthony Blunt.
The “Right Club,” was run like a secret society for pro-Nazi aristocrats, which infiltrated, and controlled the British Conservative Party, from behind the scenes.
Archibald Ramsay, was Conservative Member of Parliament for Peebles and South Midlothian, and he liaised with Irish-American, William Joyce (later known as “Lord Haw-Haw”), and Anthony Ludovici, who wrote an astonishing racist book entitled, ‘In Defense of Aristocracy: A Text Book for Tories’.
The Right Club’s most famous member was British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, who formed a British version of the Nazi Party, and who convened vast public meetings at Earls Court in London.
Members of the British Royal Family not only joined the Nazi Party in secret, but were instrumental in convincing the British and German people that Nazi ideals of ethnic cleansing, and the “Master Race,” were acceptable principles, which were worth fighting for.
Both British members of Royalty, and their cousins in Germany also helped to organise the disgusting Blitzkrieg Concentration Camps...
Some of their colleagues even supported a plan to repatriate Jewish families to Palestine.
The formation of Palestine, and its transformation into a “two-state” country, was all the work of Buckingham Palace, and the British government, who had complete control over the region, following the mandate for Palestine in 1917.
In fact, Buckingham Palace, and the British government, were instrumental in the formation of the country of Jordan, which is today’s neighbour to Palestine and Israel.
Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted in the TIMES OF ISRAEL saying that Hitler’s original intention was to enforce migration of German Jews to Palestine – and as such, Ken Livingston, is correct in his assertion, that Hitler was a supporter of this plan in line. and in cahoots with the Zionist Movement of Germany.
Britain did not ‘win’ WWII, and Germany did not ‘lose’ it.
A deal was done in secret.
This deal is only now coming to light – and it involves dozens of senior Nazis putting on business suits, and continuing Hitler’s plan to conquer Europe – but instead of using military tanks, this new plan would take over Europe economically — a new "Fourth Reich".

They have been meeting there in secret ever since…
The Bilderberg Group was founded by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands in 1952.
Prince Bernhard’s closest royal ally, and fellow family member, was Prince Philip of Wales, whose real name was, Philippos Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.
Philippos was born in Greece, Corfu in 1921, the youngest of five children, and the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece, and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
All four of his sisters married senior S.S. officers, who were also German Princes.
Three of his sisters - Sophie, Cecile and Margarita - became members of the Nazi party.
Sophia's husband, Prince Christoph of Hesse, became chief of Goering’s secret intelligence service and they were frequent guests at Nazi functions.
Phillipo, went on to fight with distinction for the Allies during WWII, where he served with the British Royal Navy, and by 1945, he had risen to the rank of first lieutenant.
During Hitler’s rise to power, and the formation of the Nazi Party in 1933, Philippos, was indoctrinated into Hitler Youth.
His parents were high-ranking members of the Nazi Party, during this time.
The House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg (The House of Glucksburg) was the Greek branch of The House of Oldenburg.
The House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the Germanic branch of The House of Wettin, arranged a marriage between Philippos, and the future Queen of England, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, who as we know became Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.
Though this arranged marriage between the two families Philippos changed his name to the less Germanic sounding, Philip Windsor.
Even more disturbing is a quote taken directly from Prince Philip’s interview with Deutsche Press in 1988:

Yes, this was a direct quote given by the Queen’s husband in 1988.

The Billy Boys were one of the most famous street gangs in Glasgow's history.
Formed in the east end during the 1920s and led by Billy Fullerton, they became known for their fierce loyalty to King, country and Protestant identity. Based around Bridgeton, they were part of a rough, hard world of poverty, territorial rivalries and street violence that shaped much of interwar Glasgow.
